Minecraft Dungeons Adds Touch Controls For Xbox Cloud Gaming Launch

Mojang has revealed that Minecraft Dungeons is receiving touch control support on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, allowing players streaming the game to a mobile device to play without a standard controller. The simple gameplay mechanics and relatively easy control scheme makes the Minecraft spin-off a prime candidate for touch controls.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will allow players to stream games directly from mobile devices starting today. The streaming component of the service, which was previewed under the Project xCloud name, allows those on Android devices to stream games that are part of Xbox Game Pass. Users can link a standard Xbox One controller to their device in order to play. However, the service is not available on iOS devices as Apple previously blocked Xbox Game Pass from running on the App Store, and only recently changed its rules to make streaming possible, but only with significant barriers still in place. In beta for several months, the newly updated version of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with streaming features is now available, launching with over 150 titles playable.

Minecraft Dungeons is one of the 150 games available now, and it's being updated to support touch controls. A new trailer from the Xbox YouTube channel revealed the change, giving players who are streaming the game via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to mobile devices the ability to play it without a controller. The video, which is embedded below, also shows that the controls can be customized. The size and position of different UI elements can be altered on the fly so that they fit better with individual devices and suit player needs more appropriately. On top of that, the UI has also been improved so that it is easier to navigate on smaller screens.

Minecraft Dungeons is a spin-off of the mainline Minecraft game. It features the same block-style graphics but switches to dungeon crawler gameplay inspired by games such as Diablo. Released in May 2020 for a variety of platforms, it received mixed reviews from critics, with the main concern being that it lacked depth and content. Mojang and Double Eleven released a free update and Creeping Winter DLC pack last week in an attempt to fix these issues. There have also been two previous DLC expansions made available for Minecraft Dungeons.

Although Minecraft Dungeons has not been anywhere near as successful as the original Minecraft game, the title has still proved to be popular with players. In fact, it became one of the best-selling games on Nintendo Switch when it launched earlier this year. So the fact that Microsoft is putting a lot of emphasis on the title as it launches the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate streaming service is no surprise. The company will be hoping that the wide appeal of the Minecraft series and the addition of touch controls to make Minecraft Dungeons easier to play will help drive users to the new service and help make it a success.
