Overwatch's annual Halloween event, Halloween Terror, begins on October 13th. The yearly spookfest is an Overwatch tradition dating back to the launch of the game in 2016. It offers players spooky, ghoulish Halloween skins for their favorite heroes, and a special wave-based co-op event to shake up the game's tried and true PVP gameplay.
When Overwatch first released in 2016, it was an overnight sensation. It provided a vibrant new take on the FPS genre and created its own subgenre in the form of the hero shooter. By filling out its roster with unique, colorful, and delightful characters, each with their own special abilities and weapons, Overwatch paved the way for future games like Apex Legends and Valorant. The fan fervor has certainly died down in the years following its release, but it's still a venerable title. And the upcoming sequel ought to breathe new life into the game as well.
Until the sequel does arrive, Blizzard is keeping fans coming back with the annual Halloween Terror event. This year's iteration was announced on the Overwatch Twitter page and will be starting later this week on October 13th. The Tweet included a brief trailer showcasing the major thing fans have come to expect from this year's event, and from special Overwatch festivities in general; new costumes. This event looks to be showcasing a lot of them; Sigma, for instance, has a brand new ghost pirate look, and Winston is decked out as some sort of Wolfman. One of the most terrifying skins belongs to new hero Echo, who's decked out as a horrifying sort of stitched doll. Check out the whole reveal below.
Long-time Overwatch fans know more or less exactly what to expect from this event, but it is a good chance for newcomers to get involved and avail themselves of some spooky new costumes. A free demo of the Nintendo Switch version of the game will be starting on the same day as the Halloween event, giving new players a chance not only to get acquainted with the game but to experience all the frights that the traditional Halloween Terror event brings.
A lot has happened to Overwatch since its release. Blizzard has been rocked by controversy after controversy, most notably the notorious ban of Hearthstone player Blitzchung. Even after that fiasco, Blizzard's come under scrutiny more recently when it was revealed that the company was mistreating and underpaying its staff, leading to the workers organizing on Slack to demand better pay. Through all this controversy, though, the game has remained an excellent multiplayer shooter, and after all this time, it's still worth getting spooky when Halloween Terror 2020 begins in Overwatch on October 13th.
