While Tony Stark may have used an LG VX-9400 phone in Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. himself, prefers the OnePlus 8T. Or at least that's what a commercial for the soon-to-be-released phone would have consumers believe. An online ad shows the former Avenger playing around with the phone as he rides home on his motorcycle.
The OnePlus 8T officially launched earlier this week. The 5G phone is available for pre-order now for $749 in the U.S. and C$1.099 in Canada and will go on sale in stores on October 23. The 6.55-inch Android phone has a 120Hz display with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 CPU (an octa-core processor with a clockspeed of up to 2.84 GHz) and comes with 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. At its price point, the OnePlus 8T will certainly be an enticing product for consumers who want some premium features at a more mid-tier price.
Earlier this year, Downey Jr. appeared in an ad touting the OnePlus 8 Pro and now he is back hyping its newer sibling phone. In the latest ad, originally posted to Weibo, the actor is seen in a trailer charging the OnePlus 8T with its proprietary 65-watt power cable, which promises a 60-percent charge in fifteen minutes. Downey, Jr. texts his significant other after wrapping up filming for the day and before heading home. After saying goodbye to one of his colleagues, he attaches the phone to his motorcycle and drives off into the distance, using the OnePlus 8T as both a GPS and a dashcam. Downey Jr. records video as he's riding and stops from time to time to take photos, such as pictures of another biker doing aerial stunts and a selfie by the water.

Certain sequences of the commercial itself are actually said to be shot with a OnePlus phone, including footage of Downey Jr. riding along the highway that was captured in 4K at 60 fps. The OnePlus 8T has a quad-lens system for its rear camera, consisting of a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 123-degree field of view, a 5-megapixel macro lens for taking photos really close to the subject, and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens. While the phone doesn't have a telephoto lens, the ad shows photos of the biker doing aerials, supposedly taken with the OnePlus 8T's 48-megapixel lens, and the image is sharp, bright, and vivid. Of course, it's a commercial, so obviously, the picture is good as it wouldn't be used in an ad otherwise. In reality, the OnePlus' 48-megapixel camera may not be as good as advertised.
Whether Downey Jr.'s endorsement of the Chinese brand will lead to a boost in sales remains to be seen. OnePlus doesn't have near the market share in its home country that Huawei does but it, unlike the No. 2 smartphone seller, also hasn't been banned by the U.S. government. While it's still a smaller player in North America, the company's reputation is growing and the OnePlus 8T, along with the 8 and 8 Pro, may start to make a bigger impression here, especially with this superhero boost.
