An Alien show is in the works from Ridley Scott and Noah Hawley. Scott created the Alien franchise and the last film he directed in the series was 2017's Alien: Covenant, a sequel to 2012's Prometheus. Critical reception to those two films was less than stellar and with middling box office results for Covenant, the future of the franchise has been up in the air. Disney's 20th Century Fox merger complicated things, leaving the rights of the franchise in the hands of a studio that didn't know what to do with it yet.
Hawley is a critically acclaimed producer, writer, and director. Hawley has worked with FX closely for the last few years, producing the critically acclaimed Fargo show based on the Coen Brothers' film. Hawley also worked on Legion, a show set within the X-Men universe. Hawley has been rumored to be at the center of an Alien series for quite some time, noting recently that he was vaguely involved with talks.
It has now been confirmed at Disney's Investor's Day that Hawley will, in fact, be making an Alien show for FX. Scott will be directly involved in the show. No word on whether or not the show will be airing linearly on the FX channel or if it will go straight to FX on Hulu, the channel's home for streaming exclusive series. There's no word when the show will be premiering, but it is expected sometime in 2021. The show will take place on Earth, a significant departure for the series.
With Hawley circling the project for years, it should be easy to get the show off the ground. His imaginative, outlandish style bodes well for the show. And, with some fans finding Covenant and Prometheus lacking, his presence will breathe new life into a franchise that desperately needs it. Scott’s involvement is another indicator of the show's potential and also a sign of the director's commitment to keeping the series alive after worries that it could have reached its end.
Even though it's only just in development, FX revealed that the series will take place in the not-too-distant future. It's setting on Earth also shows a drastic departure from what we've seen before and will likely lead to much speculation about what it could be about. Many have long suspected an origin story about the Weyland Corporation could be a part of this series. How the Xenomorphs could factor into that remains to be seen, but Alien will surely be one of the most anticipated upcoming FX shows.
