Samsung shined a light on developers and app designers for the Galaxy Store by recently announcing its 'Best Of Galaxy Store Awards' winners, including Fortnite and Spotify. The awards focus on excellent app design, in addition to innovation, quality and performance, with 2020 marking the third year that Samsung has hosted the event.
The Galaxy Store is Samsung’s app store and is available on the company's Galaxy line of phones. The store was redesigned this year, opting for a cleaner look that included a greater focus on gaming. Following recent issues, the Galaxy Store is now the only app store in the U.S. that has the popular game Fortnite available to download on a smartphone. However, it is not only a place for games, with the store also stocked full of Samsung phone apps, including Samsung TV Plus.
In a press release, Samsung highlighted the app’s smooth gameplay when announcing Fortnite as the winner of the Game of the Year award. Spotify was also declared a winner, although this time for the company's Bixby Capsule of the Year award. Bixby, the Samsung virtual assistant, works with Spotify to enable voice-activated playback on devices, and this is the first time that Samsung has included Bixby as an awards category.
Samsung also highlighted several other winners, including butterfly-effected GmbH, which won Best Themes Collection. butterfly-effected GmbH offers mobile and smartwatch themes centered around popular brands, such as Hello Kitty. Meanwhile, the award for Best Watch Face Collection went to URARITY Design Studio. According to Samsung, the two companies have been working together to take the Galaxy mobile and smartwatch experience to a new level. NBA Top Shot for Samsung was the winner of the company's Best Innovative Made for Samsung award, and this is a service that allows device owners to collect and trade "some of the greatest moments in league history" using blockchain.
Other winners in gaming included Microsoft's Forza Street for Best Game Graphics, while Gameloft won Best Role Playing Game for LEGO Legacy: Heroes Unboxed. Russian designer Tatyana Galkina won Best Watch Face Design for Golden Floral Digital Watch and Olga Gabai won Best Innovative Theme for the Dark Warrior design. In addition, the BetterHelp: Online Counseling & Therapy app, offering easy access to counseling, won the company's Best Wellness App award, and Steven Arkonovich won Developer Of the Year in the Bixby category for Big Sky Weather. In total, Samsung awarded 22 winners during this year's Best of Galaxy Store Awards virtual ceremony.
