Henry Cavill Reportedly Injured Filming The Witcher Season 2

Henry Cavill, who's currently at work on The Witcher, has reportedly injured himself while filming season 2. Cavill plays the leading role of Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series. Based on the books of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher season 1 was an unmitigated success for the streamer in terms of viewership. Critical reception leaned positive as well, with many praising Cavill's performance in particular. Perhaps sensing the series would be a success, Netflix renewed The Witcher for season 2 before the first had even released. Season 2 is set to debut in 2021 and will consist of eight episodes, the same number as season 1.

Unfortunately, filming on season 2 has faced multiple disruptions. Production began in early 2020, but was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to virtually every TV show and movie pausing filming at the same time, The Witcher actor Kristofer Hivju revealed he tested positive for the virus. Production wasn't able to resume again until late summer and continued on for several months successfully. However, in early November, The Witcher halted filming on season 2 yet again, this time due to four people related to the series testing positive. Work began again a couple weeks later, but now it seems season 2 is facing another challenge.

According to The Sun, Cavill injured his leg while on an assault course. At the time, he was wearing a safety harness and 20 feet off the ground. A source stated the incident didn't require an ambulance but will affect Cavill's ability to wear the heavy armor required for his role on The Witcher. A report from Deadline described it as "a minor leg muscle injury," also stating Cavill will be "sidelined" for a short while, but The Witcher will continue production around him. It won't be for long, as the show will take time off for the holidays at the end of the year.

Movie and TV productions, particularly those involving action scenes like The Witcher, often have to deal with injuries. Where there are stunt scenes, there are bound to be accidents, even when all precautions are taken. Additionally, there's no way to guarantee actors or other key members of a production won't injure themselves off set, which can affect filming as well. Luckily, it sounds like The Witcher will be able to work around Cavill's injury, which benefits all parties involved. It allows the show and the rest of its cast and crew to continue on and most importantly, will give Cavill ample time to recover.

It's unfortunate the injury happened during this particular season, as The Witcher has already dealt with so many production issues this year. However, it's also likely the delays and challenges brought on by COVID-19 have made the show a bit better at adapting. That filming will be able to continue despite Cavill's accident bodes well for season 2 and hopefully its 2021 release.
