Karl Urban details the most frustrating day he had while filming The Boys season 2. Previously best known for his work in the Lord of the Rings and Star Trek franchises, Urban stepped into a far more profane and violent role with The Boys, Amazon's adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's satiric comic book series. Urban plays Billy Butcher, the brash leader of the titular band of vigilantes. Butcher's desire to get revenge on the superheroes who hurt his wife Becca (Shantal VanSanten) drives his actions for much of the show's first two seasons.
The Boys season 2 premiered last September and reached even bigger heights than the first season did in 2019. The addition of the miraculously alive Becca showed viewers a different side to Butcher, who typically approaches things with coarse words and aggressive actions. That's why Becca's eventual death at the very end of season 2 was extra devastating; now, Butcher is going into The Boys season 3 with even less of his humanity. Exactly what he will do to cope with Becca's loss remains to be seen, but it's safe to say it won't be healthy.
Until more details about The Boys season 3 roll out, it's nice to reflect on the whirlwind that was the show's sophomore run. In a new interview with The Playlist, Urban looked back on Becca's brutal death scene, which took place in the middle of the woods during the day. Because of the location and further logistics caused by a scene partner's costuming, that day proved to be incredibly frustrating for Urban. He said:
To be perfectly honest, that was probably one of the most frustrating days on season two of “The Boys,” because we shot some of that sequence in the morning. And then we had to stop shooting the beats between Butcher and Becca, and they went to shoot Homeland and Stormfront because [Aya Cash] was in this prosthetic costume, and she’s been in the makeup chair for five hours, and with all respect to her comfort and sanity, the priority is to get her in and out of that as quickly as possible. And that makeup has a shelf life. So we had to actually shelve the Becca Butcher death scene. And when we finally came back to it, it was the end of the day, we weren’t losing the light and we had two takes. But that is one of those instances where you need to bring your A-game. You’ve got two shots to get it. And again, I’m just incredibly grateful that I had a scene partner of such a high caliber in Shantel because we got the performance we needed in a very limited amount of time.

It's a testament to those working on The Boys that Becca's death scene remained so impactful even with all these complications. Urban and VanSanten broke fans' hearts with her final moments, which is impressive considering many were cheering minutes before when Aya Cash's Stormfront was bested by a trio of female supes. The Boys' season 2 was an exceptional season all around, and that devastating scene, though a bit polarizing, capped it off.
The Boys is expected to begin work on season 3 soon, which means it could premiere in early 2022. That will surely come as a relief for fans who are waiting on the edge of their seats to find out what will happen next. Beyond Butcher's massive loss, The Boys season 2 concluded with the revelation that Congresswoman Victoria Neuman is also a supe - and one who has been blowing up people's heads all along. What that means for season 3 is, like everything, unclear, but it will be exciting to watch it all unfold. For Urban's sake, hopefully production won't include any days as irritating as that finale day.
