New Girl: 10 Wild Details You Never Noticed In The Series

When a sitcom makes it beyond the 100-episode mark, there's a lot of history for fans to keep up with. Whether that's continuity, long-gone characters, or changes to set pieces. There is a lot of detail that goes into making a sitcom work. New Girl is no exception.

With more fans being introduced to the show via streaming platforms everyday, there are constantly new eyes observing the show. There are also a lot of loyal fans who repeatedly binge the series and pick up on things they've never noticed before. There are definitely plenty of wild details fans could miss across those seven seasons the first time around.

10 Nick And Jess Keep Their Table

In the season two episode "Table 34," Jess and Nick are in a weird place. They're both trying to deal with the fact that Nick kissed her, and their avoidance of their feelings lead to them being at each other's throats at a singles event Cece attends.

One of the challenges is for pairs to make a table out of newspaper. Jess and Nick find themselves paired up and, arguing the entire time, manage to still make a small table that can support the weight of a grown man jumping on it. Their kiss leads Sam to break up with Jess at the event, but when they're back at the loft, the table is with them. That means one of them, after fighting, Sam breaking up with Jess, and Sam punching Nick, still went back inside the event and grabbed the table to take home.

9 The Showrunner Has A Cameo

Showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether worked on several areas of the series. In addition to developing the concept for the show, she wrote several episodes, directed two, and even had a cameo in a season five episode.

The cameo occurs when the group (minus Jess, who is on jury duty) decide to convince Reagan to be their temporary roommate. Meriwether plays an employee of the hotel where Reagan is staying who lets them into her room. Her appearance is one of many Easter eggs for fans to catch.

8 The Guys All Shave Each Other

In an odd turn of events, it turns out the men of apartment 4D take turns helping each other with their grooming habits. The audience first learns of that when Schmidt moves out of the loft for a while. When he makes the decision to move, Winston wonders who will do his fades for him. He does have a barber that he sees because he takes Nick there at one point, but it seems like Schmidt normally helps him with his hair.

Likewise, when Nick goes on his first date with Jess, it's Winston who helps him with his grooming. Winston shaves and shapes his facial hair for him, which Nick reveals to Jess later in the episode. In the seventh season, after Nick returns from his book tour, Schmidt allows Nick to shave off his mustache. For fans keeping track, that means Schmidt grooms Winston, who grooms Nick, who grooms Schmidt.

7 New Girl's Fake Brands Are Sitcom Regulars

It's common practice on television for shows to have their own "brands" of products created instead of attempting to get product placement deals. Sometimes, those brands are exclusive to the show created by the art department; other times, they're created by a prop house and multiple shows use the same products.

Two of the brands seen on New Girl are ones that appear all over other television shows as well. Heisler, the beer of choice for New Girl, has become one of the most common fake brands in Hollywood. It's been seen in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place, amongst other shows. Let's, a brand of chips used on New Girl has also been used in other sitcoms, like Community.

6 Coach And His Sisters Are A Continuity Error

At one point after his return to the show, the audience learns that Coach has sisters, and it's having sisters that supposedly allows him to understand women better. He especially applies this logic to understanding the fighting between Jess and Cece.

The trouble is, that doesn't actually make sense in the show. In the pilot episode, Coach's storyline revolved around him not understanding how to talk to women as a trainer at a gym. He even goes to Jess for help!

5 Nick's Office Features Mementoes From Past Seasons

When the show returned for a seventh (and final) season, it featured a time jump. Three years into the future, Nick and Jess convert some of the other bedrooms in the loft into their own spaces. Jess has a craft room, complete with the footstool she once thought contained meth, and Nick has an office in which to write.

Fans will notice a lot of mementoes in Nick's office from previous seasons if they're paying attention. In addition to photos of Jess from throughout the show's history, there's also a poster for his novel and a framed note from Jess. Jess' note is one of excitement from when he finishes his book with a message that says, "by gosh, you did it!"

4 Nick And Cece Go Barefoot A Lot

Because a lot of television sitcoms are filmed on studio sets, the actors tend to be fully clothed at all times - even in shoes - despite being in the characters' own homes. That's not the case in New Girl.

Characters who seem to take off their shoes a lot are Nick and Cece. A lot of Nick's scenes on the couch in the loft involve him being in only socks, or barefoot, unlike his roommates. Likewise, there are several shots in the show that see Cece standing alongside characters with no shoes, or even setting her heels down on other surfaces. In the first season episode "Injured," her heels are sitting on the piano while Winston plays and the group is in the bar after hours.

3 Shelby Doesn't Interact With The Roommates

When Winston joins the series, his first significant relationship is with Shelby. Shelby doesn't make things easy for the guy who hooked up with her, then disappeared to Latvia for two years. She also doesn't really interact with his friends.

There is one episode that devotes a storyline to Schmidt joining Shelby and Winston for trivia night at the bar in which she and Schmidt are friendly. Other than that, she doesn't share conversations with Winston's other roommates. In fact, though she appears on the roof with everyone in "Tomatoes" and goes to the fair with everyone in "Halloween," she doesn't spend any time with Nick or Jess in those episodes. Perhaps that's one of the reasons she becomes Winston's ex.

2 Coach Wears Jean Shorts In The Pilot

When the guys decide to go to a party in the pilot episode, Coach attends in what look like cut-off jean shorts. They weren't originally jean shorts.

They're actually jeggings that have been cut. That detail is part of a storyline for the character that had to be changed once the pilot was filmed. When he tries to get into the heads of the women he works with, he tries on a pair of jeggings... and then can't get them off. He opts to just cut them instead.

1 Jess Is Present For Every Wedding Proposal

When characters reach their thirties in the sitcom world, weddings and babies tend to be a hot topic of conversation. That means there are quite a few wedding storylines and marriage proposals on New Girl. Jess is there for all of them. In a lot of them, she's even instrumental in making the proposal happen.

Jess helps her father, Winston, and Paul propose to their girlfriends throughout the show. She's also there when Shivrang decides to propose to Cece for real, and when Schmidt does, as well. Of course, she's also present for her own proposals as a football player proposes to her on the first date and Nick proposes to her in the seventh season.
