The old PlayStation web store was put to rest last month by Sony; however, thanks to a Firefox browser plugin made by user SilicaAndPina, PlayStation users can now access it once more. Before the website’s quiet retirement, the PlayStation web store allowed users to purchase PS3, PSP, and Vita games on PC and Mobile.
The ability to buy games on the website was removed during the PlayStation store’s revamp in preparation for the PS5 back in October of last year. Users were still able to access the content through a region specific URL until late March, 2021. Around the same time, Sony announced plans to completely shut down the PS3, PSP, and Vita store for good, a controversial decision that was later reversed due to massive backlash from fans.
As reported by GameSpot, a Firefox browser plugin called Valkyrie PS Store by user SilicaAndPina has revived the PlayStation web store and is fully functional, utilizing archive.org’s back ups of the web store’s pages. Thus, players using the plugin can once again purchase and download PS3 and Vita titles to their consoles without using their console’s system. The plugin also provides a handy download list for users to easily pick out items.
While Sony recently reversed its decision to close the PS3 and Vita stores, the PSP store will still be closing as planned. This plugin is now the only option for players who wish to access the store outside of their console’s software. While the plugin is only for Firefox at the moment, players who would like to access the store from another browser can retrieve the corresponding links from archive.org’s backups in order to reach it.
The emergence of the Valkyrie PS Store plugin goes to show that the web store was definitely a feature that was utilized and beloved by many PlayStation fans. Since the decision to close the PS3 and Vita stores was reversed, no doubt users can breathe a little easier knowing that they won’t need to panic-purchase games and digital exclusives that would have been lost forever due to the closure. Thousands of games would have been lost for players had Sony decided not to respond to the very vocal backlash from its fans. While the PSP store is still set to close on July 2, users will be able to utilize the Firefox plugin to access the web store and finalize their collection before then.
