Collecting villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an important part of building a thriving community in an island town, and the addition of new villager species would be a positive update for gameplay. While there are currently a wide variety of villagers to choose from, many interesting species have been left out as villager options. Adding new species could also be a way to freshen up Animal Crossing: New Horizons for those who have been playing since its release over a year ago.
Currently, there are 393 villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and these are broken down into 35 different species. These species include common favorites like cats, dogs, and hamsters, as well as more exotic options like eagles, octopuses, and tigers. Often, players will search out villagers based on personal preferences, and new villagers unique to New Horizons like Raymond the cat and Judy the bear cub stay safely within the limits of what could be popular to a large audience. However, adding villagers to existing species prevents new diverse options from being introduced.
Many special NPC species are not available as villagers, including Animal Crossing's Flick the chameleon, Redd the fox, and Leif the sloth. These NPCs give a glimpse of what these species could be as villagers, as well as often being popular among fans. Brightly colored chameleons would offer more variety to the current list of primarily furry villagers, and sloth villagers would likely stand out for their unique facial features and fur patterns. Fox villagers may have a harder time holding up against similar species like cats and wolves, but if only a few were introduced with appealing designs, they could become another popular option.

Currently, there are very few aquatic villager species available in Animal Crossing. Not including birds like ducks or penguins, the list is limited to alligators, frogs, hippos, and octopuses. While a villager based on a clam or mussle wouldn't be particularly interesting, sea turtles would be a fun animal to create villager designs for. The tortoise Mayor Tortimer, while not a villager, shows how turtles could be turned into Animal Crossing characters. Hermit crabs could also make for interesting New Horizons villager, though a hermit crab the size of a villager could be frightening to bump into on a mystery island. Hermit crab villagers could have unique shells to showcase their personality, with their claws acting as hands to manipulate their surroundings.
The addition of new species in Animal Crossing: New Horizons would likely be done through a large content update. They could also be introduced slowly over the course of upcoming events throughout the rest of the year. For many, it may be the incentive needed to restart an Animal Crossing save file or a reason to pick the game back up for those who have accomplished all there is to do currently in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
