The USA Network’s Dirty John season 2, “The Betty Broderick Story,” is now on Netflix - here’s everything we know about what to expect from season 3. Based on the true-crime podcast of the same name, the show premiered on Bravo in 2018 before moving to the USA Network for the show’s second season in 2020. A year after the first season aired, Dirty John released on Netflix, broadening its audience and gaining fans as one of the streaming platform's most popular series.
In Dirty John season 1, the anthology series revolved around the life of conman and criminal, John Michal Meehan, and his relationship with Debra Newell. The story was first outlined in the popular 2017 podcast created by Wondery and The LA Times and hosted by journalist Christopher Goffard. In Dirty John season 2, the series took the show beyond the podcast, focusing on the murder trials and conviction of Betty Broderick.
Broderick’s case first gained media attention after she was arrested for the 1989 murder of her ex-husband, Dan Broderick, and his new wife, Linda. In Dirty John season 2, the series follows Broderick over two decades, from the time when she first met her husband to her controversial murder conviction in 1991. As the show is an anthology series, season 3 would most likely introduce audiences to a new murder suspect and case. But will Dirty John season 3 actually happen? Here’s everything we know about where the show is heading next.

USA hasn’t confirmed whether or not the network plans to order a third season of Dirty John. When the series premiered in 2018, it was originally ordered for two seasons. Now that Dirty John season 2 has become one of Netflix’s most popular shows, it's possible the USA Network will decide to renew the series for a third season. If not, the show's popularity could also cause another network or, more likely, Netflix, to pick up the series in the future.

Dirty John first released in the fall of 2018 with season one running through early 2019. The second season originally aired on USA in the spring of 2020, a year and a half after season 1 premiered on Bravo. Based on the show's previous season schedule, if the series does get renewed soon, Dirty John season 3 could air as early as 2022. But with the pandemic pushing film schedules back, it could take longer for the network to announce a season 3 release date.

The first two seasons of Dirty John cover stories that begin with love and end in murder. The tumultuous romantic relationships depicted in both seasons also greatly impact the lives of those around them, with their family members and closest friends becoming collateral damage in crimes involving bad romance, family drama, psychological manipulation, and betrayal. If the show is renewed for a third season, it would likely continue with this pattern. According to an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Alexandra Cunningham has said that Dirty John season 3 could feature a story of love gone wrong between family members, not a couple. "To me the ultimate example of love gone wrong is familial," said Cunningham. "Especially parentally, I think that's where love gone wrong truly begins…That's something I'd love to explore if given the chance."
