Open House: Sara Gore Gives Advice to Homebuyers | Screen Rant

The long-running show Open House takes viewers inside some of the most lavish and unique homes across the United States. During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Sara Gore, who has been the host of Open House and Open House NYC for over a decade, shared some key lessons she has learned from looking at hundreds of homes. Sara has some great advice, especially for first-time homebuyers when it comes to finding the perfect home.

Sara Gore developed a passion for interior design and real estate since becoming an Emmy-winning host of Open House. For new homebuyers looking at houses, Sara said that it is important to realize "that you are not going to get everything that you want." As such, she has a suggestion on how to narrow choices down, saying that you need to "make your list of pros and cons, and the things that you have to have versus the things you want to have." These are lessons that Sara has learned not just from the hundreds of houses she has explored as host of Open House, but in her own life as well.

Sara Gore shared that the first house she ever bought "had been on the market for a little while and the décor was horrid." She went into further detail that the house "was like mustard and maroon; there was a saloon in my sun room with a wet bar." Therefore, Sara thinks that homebuyers should try to look past the décor and focus on the house itself. Sara chose her particular first house because "it had good bones, and that is so much better than if you like someone's furniture."

Sara Gore currently has a "turn of the century Victorian, which is one project after another." When Sara was not facing the challenges of filming Open House during the pandemic, she spent much of her free time working on her own home. Sara also said that, when looking at a house, she is not afraid of projects, given that they can be a great way "to have fun with their house" and make it their own. Sara thinks that the past year has made people feel more attached to their homes, and that "so many people have taken on projects this year that they did not know they were capable of."

It is important for homebuyers to know that it is less about the individual objects in a house, and more about how each room in the home can be used to make someone happy. One of the design tips she has carried with her as the host of Open House is to always create a feeling when you walk into the house. Sara finished by saying that if homebuyers can do that, "then you're going to find a place you love and you'll be in for a very long time."
