The elevator at the TVA headquarters in Loki’s first episode is filled with strange, hard-to-identify symbols. First seen in the trailer, the elevator was the setting for a scene between Tom Hiddleston’s character and Mobius M. Mobius shortly after they first met.
The series premiere of the God of Mischief’s Disney+ series featured the debut of the Time Variance Authority, a group of time cops from Marvel Comics. It was revealed that in the MCU, the TVA was created by three alien beings known as the Time Keepers. Apparently, the organization’s purpose in the multiverse is to oversee time itself and protect it from those who possess the capability to interfere with what they call the “Sacred Timeline”. Loki learned about the TVA and their activities firsthand after being abducted by them in Mongolia. The brief time he’s already spent with him has allowed viewers to learn quite a bit about the backstory of the MCU’s multiverse and its time travel rules.
The introduction of the TVA is certainly providing many interesting details, but there’s still a lot that’s not known about them. Just one subject of mystery is the first episode’s elevator symbols. Located near the buttons, were assortments of letters and numbers like “FHF”, “2WE”, “3FG”, and “2W1”. They were separated by a singular column of symbols not part of any known language. The only symbol here that could be recognized was the smiley face at the bottom, which seems to represent the TVA mascot, Miss Minutes.
What the rest of them mean are open to speculation. Some fans have tried to connect them with previous Marvel movies, but the numbers and letters don’t correlate with any established team, film, or concept associated with the MCU. One theory that’s been raised is that each grouping corresponds with one of the timelines in the multiverse that the TVA is currently monitoring. The TVA could have assigned abbreviations like “2WE” and “LK3” to some of the various branching timelines or realities that they’ve discovered. The organization could have devoted entire floors to one world, planet, or time period, with all of the Time Variance Authority agents there are responsible for ensuring its safety.
The meaning of the symbols may never be important, but a possible answer for their significance could be revealed as the series progresses and more is learned about how the TVA operates. In true Marvel style, it may turn out that there’s so much more to them than meets the eye. It’s been made clear that that the size and scope of the TVA is massive, so there’s no telling what all their facilities encompass at this juncture. Loki’s first season may only end up exploring a small corner of the huge base occupied by the Time Variance Authority, who could have floors set up to study major locations and events that viewers didn’t even know were in MCU canon.
