Dead Space Remake Won't Feature Microtransactions & Never Will

To avoid repeating the horror franchise's previous missteps, developer EA Motive says the Dead Space remake won't launch with microtransactions and will never receive them. Dead Space 3 failed to hit the mark on many fronts due to its cooperative gameplay, lack of an emphasis on survival horror, and, of course, in-game purchases. The title's disappointing market performance didn't do it any favors either, with publisher Electronic Arts quickly sidelining the IP shortly thereafter.

Fortunately, Dead Space will return to the forefront in a remake built from the ground up by EA Motive, the team behind space combat adventure Star Wars: Squadrons. EA confirmed as much during EA Play Live, unleashing a brief teaser trailer that showcased a stunning recreation of the sci-fi horror brand's eerie atmosphere and environments. Details remain scant for the time being, but Dead Space faithful can expect improvements to the story, gameplay, and audio.

Ahead of the Dead Space reveal, Senior Producer Phil Ducharme spoke with IGN about EA Motive's interest in carefully injecting ideas into the remake that didn't enter the series until after the original. The studio aims to sidestep past mistakes, though, with special emphasis placed on avoiding Dead Space 3's controversial MTX. Thus, Ducharme told IGN, in-game purchases will "never" see the light of day in the eagerly-anticipated remake. "We're looking at what can be taken and reinjected into the first game from a future standpoint," the Senior Producer remarked. "We're also learning from mistakes such as microtransactions, which we will not have, for instance, in our game."

This is becoming a theme amongst EA's single-player games; notably, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order didn't feature MTX, either. Perhaps the renewed interest in story-driven titles has forced the publisher to reconsider its stance on certain aspects of the experience? Regardless, news that Dead Space will launch without in-game purchases is sure to please many a fan.

The original Dead Space hit stores in October 2008, ushering in a new generation of survival horror. Since Visceral Games' award-winning space odyssey laid the groundwork for the genre's resurgence, it's only fitting that Isaac Clarke returns at what arguably counts as the height of horror in video games.
