The reality show Seeking Sister Wife is about plural marriage and we're about to discuss cast members who have gotten jealous. When a new sibling is born, the first child may get jealous. When a new puppy is brought home, the first family dog may turn into a green-eyed monster. When a new wife is brought into a Seeking Sister Wife family, it could mean envy for wife number one. Though the wives may initially be onboard with welcoming new family members, for reasons such as getting extra help with housework and religion, the tables sometimes turn. Then, they are left feeling like third wheels, rather than the women their husbands married for love.
The families on Seeking Sister Wife practice polygamy, which is a form of marriage in which a husband acquires multiple spouses. Like TLC’s Sister Wives, the show details the lives of polygamist households. However, on Sister Wives, cameras follow polygamist Kody Brown and his family, while Seeking Sister Wife focuses on a multitude of family units as they attempt to bring in more wives.
Dannielle Merrifield is known for her jealousy over her husband Garrick Merrifield and potential sister wife Roberta. Though the candidate didn’t speak English and could only communicate with Dannielle and Garrick through a phone app, seeing Roberta fall head over heels in love with her husband made Dannielle uneasy. “Like Garrick texts Roberta but I don't see him kissing her and embracing her so it's hard,” she said. “There's definitely worries of getting caught up in jealousy because those feelings do come.” Even Dannielle’s mother chimed in, saying that she would be jealous too if she were her. Overall, Dannielle's mom doesn’t approve of their plural marriage.
Season two featured Paige McGee and her husband Bernie McGee, who has sadly passed away from a heat stroke and heart attack. At the time, the two sought a sister wife who could bear children. Paige was unable to do so after having five kids of her own. Though Bernie felt that her jealousy stemmed from hearing family members speak about his interactions with other women, Paige stated that she was single-handedly just jealous. However, eventually, she was ready to find another wife.
Paige said: “I truly do want to have a sister wife and live a plural lifestyle but i think my feelings about searching for a sister wife are a little complicated. On the one hand I have somebody that I'm close to -- a best friend. On the other hand there’s her being with my husband. That’s hard to think about.” While they found a match named Brandy, the couple was unable to pursue the relationship due to Paige’s jealousy.
Tami Winder admitted to being jealous of her husband Colton’s second wife Sophie at the start of their relationship. She remarked: “It was really hard for me to not say, like, ‘What does she have that I don’t?’ And it took a while to understand that, even though we’re different, we are connected by one common thing and that’s Colton.” However, Sophie wasn’t jealous at all, insisting that Colton was a wonderful husband to both of them.
With the tension surrounding the addition of another wife comes Roberta’s point, “I always thought that for a woman to live a plural relationship she would be free of those feelings.” The wives of Seeking Sister Wife have proven that jealousy exists even if they’re willingly searching for new wives. After decades of marriage, Kody Brown’s wives still experience jealousy too.
