Sophie Winder is one of the two wives in the Winder family on Seeking Sister Wife. Since the family first appeared on the TLC show in season two, the Winders have become familiar faces on reality television, noted for their unproblematic behavior but questionable life choices. The patriarch, Colton Winder, is in a relationship with his two wives, including the non-denominational Mormon Tami, whom he married first, and Sophie, his second wife.
When Sophie was first introduced to Seeking Sister Wife, she said she and Colton met online in a social media group for “like-minded believers.” Along with her grandmother, Sophie sought to meet Colton and, soon after, they began a relationship. Three months later, they tied the knot.
Sophie was born into a polygamous family and her mother was the second wife in the marriage. Because her parents divorced when she was young, Sophia never had a direct influence of plural marriage from her father. But she said that, from what she saw, her father’s wives all got along well. As an adult, Sophie is able to see that they were a positive example of polygamy. After the divorce, Sophie's mother single-handedly raised her, though they got help from their Latter Day Saints church. There, Sophie was baptized when she was 8 years old. She first became interested in plural marriage at 16 years old. “I am thankful for my life, and thankful for the choices that have brought me to where I am,” she said on the Winder Family blog. “Choosing to live plural marriage is one of the best choices I have ever made, and all good things have followed since.”
Outside the show, the 29-year-old enjoys working on the family’s farm, as well as playing the guitar, gardening, and reading. She says she has a “love of knowledge” and would like to further her studying of midwifery and self-sufficiency. On their farm, she takes care of the lambs, pigs, and cattle, and the orchard that Tami and Colton planted years ago. Like Tami, she likes to sit on their porch with a cup of tea, talking about life and hobbies with her family and appears to only partake in Instagram and her family blog to keep fans updated, unlike other Seeking Sister Wife stars.
Sophie was open about her fertility issues prior to giving birth, something Tami also struggled with. In November 2019, she revealed that she had undergone a chemical pregnancy and a miscarriage. “Bringing forward pregnancy loss and miscarriage awareness, my heart goes out to all of you that have experienced infertility, pregnancy loss and infant loss,” she said. After numerous tried to get pregnant, Sophie welcomed a son named Ephraim. Most recently, Sophie announced she is pregnant with her second child, Winder baby number three.
Sophie loves her life, and being part of Seeking Sister Wife has given her the opportunity to share it with others. Giving viewers a glimpse into her life, she said she hopes her family is portrayed in a truthful light. To her, the family is never boring and they won’t be for a while. “I love my family,” she told her blog, “and I love the path we are on.”
