The Next D&D Campaign Will Feature Classic 80s Action Figures

The upcoming The Wild Beyond the Witchlight adventure for Dungeons & Dragons will feature some familiar faces for old-school fans of the series, as some of the D&D action figures from the '80s will appear in the story. D&D experienced its best-ever year of sales in 2020, but the game has been around for a long time, with the first edition debuting in '74.

The D&D action figures debuted in '83, with characters that were created specifically for the toy line. This was before D&D had many of its iconic characters that fans know today, so it made sense to introduce new heroes and villains in the action figure line. These included characters like Warduke the Fighter, Kelek the Sorcerer, and Strongheart the Paladin. The characters had playable appearances in the actual D&D adventures like Quest for the Heartstone. A second series of figures was released in '84, but these received a more limited run, and the line was canceled.

Some of the kids who were fans of the D&D action figures would later work for Wizards of the Coast. This gave them the chance to bring back the characters from the action figures, with some of them appearing in the official D&D mini sets. The action figures will soon be making their fifth edition debut, as part of an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

Wizards of the Coast has revealed in a press release for the upcoming The Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign that some of the action figure characters will appear in the story. These include Warduke, Strongheart, and Kelek. It's unclear in what capacity these characters will appear, but it's likely that players will meet them in an amusement park. The Wild Beyond the Witchlight involves the Witchlight Carnival, which the players will visit at the start of the adventure. It's possible that the party will compete against the retro D&D characters in minigames.

The press release mentioned that other classic D&D characters from the '80s will appear, and there are some obvious candidates. There was a popular Dungeons & Dragons cartoon in the '80s, which started with kids from the real world entering a D&D world through an amusement park ride. Maybe the Witchlight Carnival will involve kids from the Forgotten Realms being sent to the real world, where they have to complete dangerous adventures like filing their taxes on time or keeping up with their mortgage payments.
