Netflix: Best New TV Shows & Movies This Weekend (August 20)

This weekend, Netflix is adding a documentary about a serial killer, a thriller movie, a comedy miniseries, and the movie of a Nickelodeon animated TV show. The entertainment industry continues gradually going back to normal amidst the coronavirus pandemic, with theaters around the world reopening and showing some of the many movies that had to be delayed. Still, streaming platforms continue to be at the top of their game, housing movies that skipped a theatre release and adding new original and licensed content every week, as is the case with Netflix.

Last weekend, Netflix welcomed different TV shows, like the South Korean rom-com series I Need Romance, seasons 3 and 4 of the educational show Mother Goose Club, season 1 of Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, and season 6 of the fantasy series Winx Club, along with the rom-com The Kissing Booth 3, the thriller Beckett, the horror drama series Brand New Cherry Flavor, and the French TV series Gone for Good. This weekend, on the licensed content front, the streaming giant will bring the comedy Walk of Shame, the drama Like Crazy, and the Egyptian mystery movie Gunshot.

As for original content, Netflix subscribers will get to enjoy a documentary about a serial killer, a thriller movie starring Jason Momoa, a comedy miniseries starring Sandra Oh, and the adventures of the Loud family in Scotland. Here are the best movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this weekend - August 20.

This week’s dose of documentaries on Netflix is Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes. In 1983, Britain’s most notorious serial killer, Dennis Nilsen, confessed to killing 15 people over a five-year period. With the help of a personal archive left in Nilsen’s cell after his death, the documentary tells Nilsen’s story from a young boy in a quiet Scottish fishing village to a cold-blooded murderer in the streets of London. Through interviews from police, journalists, survivors, and the killer himself through never-before-published cassette tapes, Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes explores how he was able to get away with his crimes for five years.

Netflix's Sweet Girl is an action thriller movie directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza. It follows devoted family man Ray Cooper (Jason Momoa), who vows justice against the pharmaceutical company responsible for pulling a potentially life-saving drug from the market just before his wife (Adria Arjona) dies from cancer. When his search for the truth leads to a deadly encounter that puts him and his daughter Rachel (Isabela Merced) in harm’s way, Ray’s mission turns into a quest for vengeance in order to protect the only family he has left.

Netflix's The Chair is a comedy-drama miniseries written by Amanda Peet. It follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh) as she navigates her new role as the Chair of the English department at the prestigious Pembroke University, as she’s the first woman to chair the department and one of the few staff members of color at the university. Also starring are Holland Taylor, Jay Duplass, Bob Balaban, and David Morse.

The biggest family at Nickelodeon is getting its own movie on Netflix this weekend. The Loud House Movie follows the Loud family as they go on a family adventure to Scotland, where they discover that they are descendants of Scottish royalty, and so they quickly indulge in the most wish-fulfilling high-life ever when they discover their ancestral home is a castle.
