In honor of No Man's Sky's fifth-year anniversary, developer Hello Games unleashed a celebratory video and a quick tease regarding the next major content update called Frontiers. Among the most hyped games in recent memory, No Man's Sky first hit stores for PC and PlayStation 4 on August 9, 2016. It didn't release under the best circumstances, however, as players quickly discovered the title lacked previously promised content and fell short of even relatively low expectations.
Within two years of its rollout, the tide started turning in No Man's Sky's favor, thanks in large part to updates that transformed the experience. NEXT counted as the first of such changes, ushering in multiplayer gameplay options that Hello Games teased in the lead up to launch. This particular update also overhauled the graphics and introduced refined base-building mechanics. Hello Games' efforts didn't stop there either; as such, the redemption arc for No Man's Sky has been rather impressive to watch unfold. The indie studio spent the last few years unleashing VR support in Beyond, massive planetary diversity in Origins, a next-gen update, and much more. And fans should be pleased to learn the journey isn't over yet.
Today, August 9, marks the space-faring title's fifth anniversary; thus, Hello Games shared a video to celebrate the occasion. The video breezes through No Man's Sky's brief history, recounting the reveal, interviews with Managing Director Sean Murray, the 2016 launch, as well as the myriad updates that have gone live in the years since. Those who watch to the very end will receive a quick tease for the next update, Frontiers, which only boasts a text-based logo for the time being. Details concerning release plans and content presently remain under wraps. But while thanking players for their support in a fifth anniversary message, Murray relayed the following, in part: "There is still a lot we want to try, so much we are still excited for. The next step on that journey is not far off. We’ll have more to share on FRONTIERS with travelers very soon."
What else Hello Games may have up its sleeve for No Man's Sky is anyone's guess at present. So much in the vast universe has already received exploration, including the likes of living ships, mech suits, and companions.
Interestingly, developers at the UK-based studio haven't exclusively focused their efforts on space-faring exploits. Last year saw the crew drop The Last Campfire, a story-based puzzle adventure about an adorable lost ember trying to find their way back home.
No Man's Sky is available to play across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms. The Frontiers update currently lacks release details.
