QuakeCon 2021 Includes A "Pete Hines Dog Chat" With WeRateDogs

The full schedule for QuakeCon 2021 has been revealed, and fans will be treated to a "Dog Chat" with Bethesda Softworks' Pete Hines and WeRateDogs, as well as tournaments, giveaways, and a fresh look at games like Deathloop. WeRateDogs is a Twitter account and website that rates dogs, and the brand's appearance at QuakeCon is definitely unexpected.

The relationship between video games and dogs has strengthened over the years, in part thanks to Twitter accounts such as Can You Pet The Dog. Can You Pet The Dog highlights games that do or do not include petting pups as a gameplay feature. The account has nearly half a million followers, and has directly influenced developers' decisions to include the mechanic or not. Many big games have provided post-launch patches introducing the feature due to the account's influence, while others have added the feature during development. Accounts like Can You Pet The Dog can provide exposure for video games, and help them reach new audiences. This can make gameplay additions and tweaks worthwhile for the developers. WeRateDogs might focus on real-world dogs instead of video game dogs, but its nine million followers appreciate canines of all types, which is perhaps why it features in the QuakeCon schedule.

The schedule for this year's QuakeCon reveals that Bethesda's Pete Hines will be joined by WeRateDogs' Matt Nelson for a dog-centric talk that will take place on the event's second day, Friday, August 20. The QuakeCon website doesn't give too much away about the talk, but does state that the duo will "rate dogs and more," suggesting a light-hearted chat touching on both games and dogs. The panel will take place at 3:30 p.m. ET, and will be available to watch via Bethesda's official Twitch account.

Unfortunately, the schedule doesn't disclose too much on what fans can expect from the WeRateDogs and Hines' "Dog Chat." It's likely that conversation will be based around dogs that appear in Bethesda games, such as Dogmeat from Fallout 4, though the pair could also showcase some of the dogs owned by Bethesda developers. The rating process isn't likely to be a grueling one, with WeRateDogs typically giving pooches high scores such as 14/10. Earlier this year, the canine inspiration behind Dogmeat in Fallout 4 sadly passed away, which will likely be mentioned at some point during the panel.

QuakeCon 2021 is sounding like an unmissable event for Bethesda fans, with a heavy focus on some of the company's most classic games. The Elder Scrolls Online will have multiple panels across the three days, and even The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim will get a nod with a talk exploring the game's iconic opening scene. Meanwhile, Doom Eternal, Fallout 76, and the upcoming timeloop shooter, Deathloop, will also be featured. Deathloop is the next big release from Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks, and is scheduled to launch next month. Deathloop will be a PS5 console exclusive for one year, something which was agreed before Xbox acquired Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media.
