James Gunn has shared a behind-the-scenes photo from The Suicide Squad and described working on the film's massive Jotunheim flood scene. As a standalone soft-reboot of David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, Gunn’s first DC outing sees the return of some members of Task Force X, including Harley Quinn and Rick Flag, who are joined by newcomers Peacemaker, Bloodsport, King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, and Polka-Dot Man. Under orders from Amanda Waller, they are sent to the island of Corto Maltese to destroy all traces of Project Starfish/Starro the Conqueror, which is housed in the former WWII base turned top-secret facility, Jotunheim.
When the Suicide Squad finally infiltrates Jotunheim, most of the group sets up explosives throughout the building as Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) enter the underground laboratory with The Thinker (Peter Capaldi). The latter reveals that Starro was brought to Earth by the U.S. government, who then used the inhabitants of Corto Maltese as test subjects. Task Force X was sent there to cover the government’s tracks. As Rick Flag and Peacemaker have a heated disagreement on what to do with this new information, Polka-Dot Man accidentally ignites the pre-set explosives while fighting the Corto Maltese military, leading the upstairs to flood (thanks to a broken aquarium) and the facility to fall apart.
Posting on Instagram, Gunn described the flooding and collapse of the office space in Jotunheim as one of the most difficult scenes to shoot in The Suicide Squad. He accompanied the description with a behind-the-scenes photo of David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man standing in the flooded office space. In the image's caption, Gunn said that the production team worked all day to get just a few seconds of film for the sequence. Check out his post below:

Gunn has been active on social media recently, sharing pieces of behind-the-scenes information about The Suicide Squad's filmmaking process both leading up to and after its release in theaters and on HBO Max. In a previous post, the director revealed how the crew filmed the fight scene between Peacemaker and Rick Flag mirrored in the former’s helmet. Ultimately, Peacemaker kills Flag and goes after Ratcatcher 2, who accidentally discovers the truth about Jotunheim. Thankfully, after enduring the office flood and serendipitously falling multiple stories to safety, Bloodsport (Idris Elba) shoots Peacemaker before he can cause her harm. But The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene revealed that Peacemaker was still alive, setting up his spin-off series that is set to air on HBO Max.
Gunn clearly enjoyed his time working on The Suicide Squad and is proud of what the production was able to accomplish. As a director, Gunn did an expert job navigating the logistics of the Jotunheim scene, especially when considering that it also includes the humanoid King Shark, which Gunn has called his toughest CGI character yet. The visuals, set pieces, and action sequences in the film are incredibly impressive, a standard that Gunn will no doubt bring to the upcoming Peacemaker series and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
