Tom Hardy Is More Important For Morbius Than A Tom Holland Spider-Man Cameo

Morbius might include a cameo by none other than Tom Hardy, which would be more important than one by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps expanding, the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters continues its formation. This universe began in 2018 with Ruben Fleischer’s Venom, which gave Eddie Brock (now played by Tom Hardy) and the symbiote Venom another chance on the big screen after their not-so-successful appearance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Although critics weren’t on board with Venom, it was a big box office success, allowing Sony to continue building its own universe of Marvel characters.

Venom and Eddie will be back in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, where they will come face to face with Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) and another, more powerful symbiote known as Carnage. After that, the next adventure in Sony’s universe is Morbius, directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease. Morbius will see Michael trying a dangerous cure that afflicts him with a form of vampirism and which grants him superhuman abilities, as well as a strong thirst for blood. The first trailer for Morbius brought a lot of excitement and anticipation as it showed connections to the MCU through a poster of Spider-Man and the appearance of Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton), and it might count on the presence of another big character.

The Sony/Marvel deal is what makes it possible for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to be part of the MCU and for Morbius to have connections to it, but it’s also what limits what Sony’s universe can do with Spider-Man and its characters. This is why fans are hoping Spider-Man will show up in Venom 2 or Morbius, but it all points at Hardy’s Eddie and Venom being the ones who will appear in Morbius. Director Daniel Espinosa appears to have accidentally spoiled that Tom Hardy will appear in Morbius, though most likely in just a cameo appearance, which would be more important than if Spider-Man showed up.

As mentioned above, there’s only much Sony can do with Spider-Man due to the studio’s deal with Marvel, so if Spider-Man was to appear in Morbius it would be very brief and also very limited, which would ultimately be disappointing. The appearance of Hardy’s Eddie/Venom, on the other hand, would be another step into building the Spiderverse on Sony’s side and would bring together the worlds of Venom and Morbius in a smoother way. It would also be a lot more exciting and funny to see how Venom and Morbius would interact, given the comedic tones that Sony has given to Eddie and the symbiote, and the darker, more serious tone Morbius is going for (judging by the trailer, at least). Of course, as Venom is also Sony’s property, there are no limitations to what they can do with him in Morbius, and it could even be yet another step towards building the highly-anticipated Sinister Six movie.

Fans still have to wait a couple more months to meet Michael Morbius and see how his story will connect to the MCU, what Vulture’s role will be, and if Eddie/Venom will really show up and what will be the reason for that, but until then, there will surely be a variety of theories. It’s also to be seen if Venom: Let There Be Carnage will provide some hints at how Eddie could appear in Morbius, adding more connections between these two characters and setting up something bigger for Sony’s Marvel universe.
