Christian Bale is set to play Gorr the God Butcher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so who is the character and what's his backstory? The Marvel Comics villain will be the main villain in Thor: Love and Thunder, an MCU Phase 4 film directed by Taika Waititi. Given the magnitude of Gorr the God Butcher's powers, along with Bale's prestige as a casting choice, fans are naturally hyped about the possibilities, and recent set photos have worked wonders in stoking that excitement for fans of the long-running Marvel franchise.
In Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will be joined once again by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who emerges as the Goddess of Thunder. Tessa Thompson will also reprise her role as Valkyrie, who is now ruling over New Asgard. Waititi and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson are taking inspiration from The Mighty Thor comics, which suggests that Jane will battle cancer while also battling more cosmic enemies. The inclusion of Bale's Gorr the God Butcher makes the storyline especially intriguing, as fans have been awaiting his official MCU introduction despite the character itself being a relatively new introduction to Marvel Comics.
Casting a star like Christian Bale in the MCU as Gorr the God Butcher is huge. The actor has a strong worldwide fanbase among comic book enthusiasts after starring as Batman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and his name also carries weight from movies like American Psycho, The Machinist, and The Prestige. His accomplishments as an actor make him a worthy addition to the Thor series as the next villain that the son of Odin and his allies must face off against. Here's what you need to know about Gorr the God Butcher, and why the character is more than just a typical baddie for the God of Thunder.

Created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić, Gorr the God Butcher first appeared in the January 2015 comic Thor: God of Thunder #2. His origin story dates back more than three thousand years to a grim planet, where his people attempt to survive the harsh conditions while praying to the Gods. When Gorr's wife and children die along with his mother, the character experiences something of a crisis of faith and lashes out against the almighty protectors that his people have worshipped for so long. Gorr is chastised for his unorthodox beliefs and eventually plans to exact his revenge on the Gods in violent means. So, when two of them suddenly appear and battle, Gorr decides to take advantage of the opportunity by bonding with a weapon called All-Black the Necrosword. Gorr murders his first God before then going on to spend two thousand years wreaking havoc across the cosmos.
Eventually, Gorr arrives on Earth where he encounters Thor and tortures him while seeking out information about the other members of the Asgardian race. The villain then imprisons Shadrak, the God of Bombs, and uses his intelligence to create the "Godbomb," an explosive the size of the moon that can kill every God in existence. Gorr actually uses the device as a means to time travel, allowing him to confront a young Thor with his work before then traveling on to a dystopian future. Ultimately, three different versions of Thor square off against Gorr - a storyline that is resolved in the comics while incorporating the villain's son, Agar.

Gorr's powers stem directly from the Necrosword, which bestows its user with gifts such as immortality and flight. The symbiotes of Marvel Comics, such as Venom among others, also descend from the All-Black weapon. Gorr's Necrosword gives him superhuman abilities, and he can use his mind to conjure up weapons and armor as well. The Necrosword also allows Gorr to regenerate, which makes him even more dangerous than the average foe Thor may come up against.
With the Necrosword, Gorr the God Butcher creates versions of his dead wife and son as a way to cope with his perpetual loneliness. The baddie also creates his own guards, called Black Berserkers, who protect him from Thor and make him even more powerful through their dirty deeds. As a character, the inherent tragedy is that Gorr the God Butcher despises all-powerful Gods and spends his lifetime killing them, but ultimately he too is someone with unfathomable power, especially when considering his construction of the Godbomb.

English actor Christian Bale was officially cast as Gorr the God Butcher in December 2020. In Thor: Love and Thunder, he'll bring legitimate A-list star power to the role, along with a method technique that will undoubtedly make his MCU performance unique among the host of actors who have embraced a villainous role before him. Bale is a four-time Academy Award nominee, and won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for portraying the unpredictable Dicky Eklund in The Fighter. The actor starred as the fictional serial killer Patrick Bateman in the 2002 cult classic American Psycho, and famously starred in the aforementioned Dark Knight trilogy as the titular Caped Crusader himself. In recent years, Bale has portrayed Dick Cheney in Vice and Ken Miles in Ford v Ferrari.
Bale seems to be a popular fan choice for Gorr the God Butcher among MCU and film fans alike. Despite being known as a "serious" actor, he's fully capable of blending drama with comedy, which is definitely a plus when starring opposite someone like Hemsworth. In addition, Bale previously worked with Portman - his Thor: Love and Thunder co-star - for the 2015 film Knight of Cups. When recalling the experience, Portman noted (via Yahoo) that Bale's on-set energy positively changed the entire feel of the shoot:
"Christian would do surprising things all the time... It's fun to watch – and sometimes scary, like when he's like diving off a dock into the ocean when you don't expect it in the middle of a scene. But he also keeps everything feeling very alive and spontaneous. It was really a fun, unusual experience."

It remains to be seen how Waititi will approach Gorr the God Butcher's complex backstory in Love and Thunder, as he could introduce Bale in media res during a battle sequence or take a more linear approach by going way back in time for an origin story primer. As has already been mentioned, leaked set photos have given fans their first glimpse at the look at Waititi and Bale are taking for the character of Gorr the God Butcher. Despite the advancements of computer-generated imagery and technology, it would appear as though Marvel Studios is continuing in the vein of characters such as Dave Bautista's Drax the Destroyer, Paul Bettany's Vision, and Karen Gillan's Nebula. Christian Bale can be seen wearing extensive prosthetics, though that does not rule out the possibility that there may be some enhancement provided by CGI technology during post-production.
Whatever the case and however Gorr ends up being represented on screen, the MCU storyline will inevitably lead to an initial clash between Gorr the God Butcher and Thor. And since the Thor actor will continue to be part of the MCU beyond Phase 4, Love and Thunder could leave Gorr alive at the end, laying the groundwork for another explosive showdown in the future. With the inclusion of Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, Love and Thunder will be a film about traditional power struggles and progressive storytelling. There's an intriguing character dynamic with Thor and Jane, not to mention Valkyrie being the first LGBTQ superhero in the MCU. As for Gorr the God Butcher, he exists to kill Gods by any means necessary, and has a deeply tragic backstory that will make him an especially complicated figure, at least if Bale taps into his full range as a performer. However, Waititi may ultimately look for humor in the darker aspects of the villain's story, just as he did in the polarizing 2019 film JoJo Rabbit.
