A 1990s post-screening reaction video to GoldenEye has resurfaced online, and it features Idris Elba. Created by writer Ian Fleming in 1953, James Bond (aka 007) made his big-screen debut with the help of Sean Connery in Dr. No almost a decade later. Since then, a total of seven actors have played the British secret service agent in some of the most successful movies of all time, including Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and the current Bond, Daniel Craig.
Following Timothy Dalton, Brosnan became the fifth actor to play Bond in Martin Campbell’s GoldenEye (1995), which is widely considered to be one of the best films in the franchise. However, Brosnan’s fourth and last outing as Bond, Die Another Day (2002), was released the same year as The Bourne Identity, a film that set a new precedent for action espionage. Following this, it was clear that a new, less campy and more contemporary Bond was needed and, in 2006, Daniel Craig starred in Campbell’s Casino Royale. This year’s No Time To Die marks Craigs fifth and final film as 007, and speculation about who will follow him has swirled since he confirmed his exit from the iconic role. For several years now, Idris Elba has been a popular fan pick to replace Craig as the next iteration of Bond.
Recently, Twitter user DoubleOKevin shared a retro video of audience members being asked what they thought of Brosnan’s debut as Bond in GoldenEye. The publicity video appears to be from 1995 and sees a seemingly 23-year-old Elba standing with a friend as the pair give their thoughts on the movie and Brosnan's spy hero. “He’s really good,” Elba said. “He’s got all the charm. He’s got all the looks ... He's fit, he's strong ... Yeah, he’s alright.” Check out the full video below:

At the time of the above video, Elba was just starting his acting career in the UK. Now, Elba is a household name, appearing in everything from Luther, Fast & Furious, and Star Trek to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More recently, Elba played anti-hero Bloodsport in James Gunn's DC Extended Universe film, The Suicide Squad. Ironically, Brosnan named Elba and Tom Hardy as his top choices to replace Craig as Bond following No Time to Die. Despite things coming full circle, however, Elba has claimed many times over that his association with the role is purely a rumor.
Much like how Craig’s contemporary take on 007 was a departure from campier Bond films, including GoldenEye, Elba would bring a much-needed change to the nearly 60-year canon. However, Elba is 49 years old and one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood, so the actor doesn’t need the character to make a name for himself. What's more, it seems likely that the studio would want to sign the next Bond to a multi-film contract to guarantee several projects with the new 007, and its unclear whether Elba would be interested in signing up for a long-term commitment. For now, all eyes are on No Time to Die, which will wrap up Craig’s overarching narrative. After numerous COVID-19-related delays and millions of dollars in marketing, the film has its work cut out for it when it releases next month.
