Sex Education: What Happens To Moordale (Can It Be Saved?)

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Sex Education season 3.

The characters have gone through a number of radical changes in Sex Education season 3, but perhaps the biggest development has been the upheaval the students inadvertently caused that determined the future of Moordale Secondary — but, can the school be saved? Moordale has been a crucial aspect of Sex Education and it’s where the students have evolved and befriended each other, so it’s hard to imagine the school not existing in some capacity, with the events of the season 3 finale suggesting it could be the end for good.

In a bid to take back their reputation following a barrage of Headteacher Hope Haddon’s strict and immoral new policies, the students of Moordale — led by Jackson, Vivienne, and Cal, the new student transfer from America — put together a show that neither the parents, press, or the school’s developers would soon forget. Leaning into the label of “sex school,” the students attempted to make public their pride for Moordale as it once was and not what Hope had tried to change it to for the sake of public appearances. Suffice it to say that their display ended up backfiring, with Moordale’s developers pulling all of their financial support of the school and leaving the students to fend for themselves to obtain any remaining credits needed to graduate.

This unexpected turn truly puts the future of Moordale in jeopardy. The closing of the school will likely see the students scrambling to find a way to fulfill requirements to graduate elsewhere. All that said, there isn’t a challenge posed to the students in Sex Education that they haven’t been able to overcome somehow and it’s possible they — just like they united to prove a point to Hope and the community — could hatch a plot that will convince developers to reinvest in the school. Conversely, the charge to find others who are willing to financially support Moordale; maybe by way of a press stunt that will draw some positive attention towards the school.

However, if Moordale can’t be saved, there’s a chance the students affected will have to transfer to other schools. That could significantly change the character dynamics throughout Sex Education in a potential season 4, especially as Moordale is the primary place where they converge and, crucially, where a lot of the series’ action takes place. It’s hard to imagine the Netflix series losing Moordale as one of its prime settings, but it does point to the possibility that season 4 of Sex Education might be its last. If that should be the case, then saving Moordale from closing permanently could be the very thing that brings the students together one last time before they graduate. It would certainly be a great way to end the series.

Moordale is ultimately one of the cornerstones of Sex Education and season 3 saw the students’ investment in owning its reputation as a “sex school” by making it their own. While it only worked to make the school look even worse in the eyes of the public, who likely believed it was so corrupt it couldn’t be saved at all, Moordale’s students have always been at the heart of the show and saving it would bring them all back together for a cause that would benefit them and future students of the school.
