The Gateway 2 News & Updates: Everything We Know & Will It Happen?

Warning: Major SPOILERS for The Gateway (2021)

Here is every news story and update we know about The Gateway 2. An emotionally intense action thriller, The Gateway first earned interest back in 2013 when the film's screenplay, written by Alexander Felix Bendaña, landed on the Black List -- an annual survey of the "most-liked" unpublished movie screenplays. When it finally started filming in 2019, The Gateway hit another road bump when it, like many movies, faced pandemic-related delays, forcing The Gateway to sit in limbo just a little longer until the filmmakers could finish production and set a split theatrical/VOD release date for late summer 2021.

A modern-day noir thriller, The Gateway follows a down-on-his-luck social worker named Parker (Shea Whigham) who finds himself in over his head when one of his single mother client's (Olivia Munn) recently paroled psychopath husband (Zach Avery) threatens her family's safety, immediately luring them all back into his life of crime. Of course, Parker volunteers himself to go beyond the demands of his job description to protect this family, risking his life in the process as the violence and stakes rapidly escalate.

Directed by Michele Civetta (Agony), The Gateway features several exciting sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat live-action sequences that have received positive praise from critics, despite the movie's overall stilted pacing and mixed critical reception. With that in mind, here is everything we know about The Gateway 2.

With such a conclusive ending to the first film, resulting in the death of the lead character, The Gateway 2 seems fairly unlikely. Already, the existence of The Gateway feels somewhat miraculous, considering the long, bumpy, multi-year road it took to land a release date. As of yet, no one involved in The Gateway has mentioned any possibility or interest in a sequel effort; although the prospect of an action franchise centered on a guardian angel-style social worker is undoubtedly appealing.

Without official confirmation of a sequel, a release date for The Gateway 2 remains purely speculative, if not entirely hopeful. Again, considering the difficulty in funding, filming, producing, and releasing the first film, The Gateway 2 is perhaps not the smartest bet for any hopeful film buff to make. Assuming The Gateway reaches a level of success and interest to warrant a sequel or spinoff title, it's possible that The Gateway could see itself become a franchise of sorts -- whether as a film series or TV show -- centered on the lead character and his various exploits related to the various dangers and demands necessitated by his various clients. However unlikely this prediction, it seems the only successful way forward for a story of this nature.

With the central problem of Munn's character, Dahlia, resolved, there isn't much need for The Gateway cast and characters to reprise their roles in a sequel. Nonetheless, if The Gateway were to continue, it'd likely see an entirely new cast of characters, ideally with a range of distinct problems that would be addressed episodically. Which is to say that The Gateway 2 would be more like the franchise hitting the reset button rather than continuing the already resolved storyline of the first film. However, as The Gateway's closing credits suggested, Dahlia's story is but one of many. Working with this information, The Gateway may theoretically change its cast and characters with each rendition, perhaps settling on a lead social worker protagonist in the sequel who would become the central mainstay of the franchise.

Of course, without official confirmation of a sequel, everything stated up to this point is purely speculative -- if not wildly speculative. Any expected story details for The Gateway 2 should also be considered purely/wildly speculative. All the same, if a sequel is in order, one would hope that The Gateway 2 would stick to its central premise of a no-holds-barred protective social worker whose generosity and dedication liken him to a modern-day saint.
