Walking Dead Proves One Injury Means Nothing Anymore

The Walking Dead is leaving the impression that leg wounds don’t really matter in the long run anymore. A situation that occurred with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in the show’s latest episode is the second major example of this particular kind of injury not being taken seriously in the world of The Walking Dead.

The outcome of a brutal assault initiated by the Reapers was revealed by The Walking Dead season 11, episode 3, titled “Hunted”. Because of the attack, Maggie’s group suffered a number of casualties, including Cole (James Devoti), Agatha (Laurie Fortier), and Duncan (Marcus Lewis). One had his throat cut, a second died from blood loss, and the third was swarmed by zombies. Plus, Alden (Callan McAuliffe) took a cut across the stomach that slowed them down significantly. At his urging, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan had to leave him behind in a church, in the hopes that he’ll somehow survive until Maggie gets a chance to come back for him.

It’s interesting to note that the character who impeded the trio’s progress in the episode was Alden and not Negan. After all, it was Negan who was stabbed in the knee with a knife during the Reaper fight. Following the battle, reaching their destination as quickly as possible became their most important goal. Considering the nature of Negan’s injury, it would have made sense if he too presented a major obstacle for them, but that wasn’t the case at all. Negan was clearly feeling the pain during fights with the zombies, but what happened to his knee didn’t bother him as much as one would expect. In fact, he was still able to help Alden walk.

This isn’t the first time that The Walking Dead has treated leg injuries as minor setbacks that can be easily dealt with. Another instance of this was in season 10’s “Stalker” when Daryl (Norman Reedus) had his showdown with Alpha (Samantha Morton). During the altercation, Alpha stabbed Daryl in the leg with a knife. The way the blood spurted out indicated the knife hit an artery, yet the character managed to survive regardless. He was taken out of commission for the remainder of the episode, but it was hardy an issue for him after that. Daryl was seen limping in the episodes that followed, but the knife wound didn’t keep him from winning a fight with a Reaper, or taking down zombies on a routine basis.

Strangely, The Walking Dead seems to have forgotten how debilitating leg wounds can be, particularly when they happen in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. In Fear the Walking Dead, Chris was killed by his own friends due to being hindered by a broken leg. The Walking Dead, on the other hand, is letting its characters easily get past this sort of problem. In a world where being able to run and react quickly in combat are essential to survival, a knife wound to the leg can bring doom to even the most skilled fighter.
