Marvel Social Media Claims Blade Movie Could Release In 2022

The official Indian Twitter account for Marvel Studios reveals the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade movie is reportedly releasing in October 2022. First created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, the titular hero made his debut as a supporting character in 1973's The Tomb of Dracula No. 10 before leading his own comic line. Blade is a dhampir who uses his superhuman and daywalker abilities to hunt down and rid the world of vampires.

Blade would first be adapted for the big screen with the Wesley Snipes-led 1998 film, whose box office success would spawn both a trilogy and revitalize Marvel's film efforts. The first sequel, Guillermo del Toro's Blade II, would see a similar box office smash and equally mixed critical reception while the threequel would deliver poor reviews and a modest financial return, effectively ending Snipes' series. Marvel Studios would regain the rights to the character in 2012 and announced development on an MCU-set film at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con with Mahershala Ali starring and would land writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour and Bassam Tariq earlier this year.

With a month remaining until the release of the next Phase Four installment, the official Indian Twitter account for Marvel Studios shared a lineup of upcoming MCU films to build anticipation for their releases in the country. Amongst the titles announced was the Blade reboot, which the post states will release in India on October 7, 2022, though no official confirmation has come from a domestic account. Though the news comes from an official Marvel Studios account, there are a number of factors that raise skepticism for the Blade release date. The film only landed its writer, Watchmen alum Stacy Osei-Kuffour, in February and its director, Mogul Mowgli's Bassam Tariq, in September and a report coming out in May that the studio would be taking its time to allow Osei-Kuffour to hammer out the script, pushing the production start from September of this year to July 2022. Should the film still be aiming for this production start date, the turnaround time would be far the shortest of any MCU film to date with just three months to shoot, edit and screen to studio executives and test audiences.

Additionally, Marvel Studios' line-up of 2022 titles is already largely set in place with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessThor: Love and ThunderBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels, which would make Blade's inclusion of crowding the schedule when also factoring in Disney+ MCU shows such as Ms. Marvel. The studio also recently announced four untitled MCU films set to release in 2024 on top of three in 2023, the likelihood of which would be the Mahershala Ali-led reboot as well as Jon Watts' Fantastic Four reboot and the MCU-set Deadpool film, amongst other projects. Only time will tell whether Marvel Studios confirms Blade's 2022 release or debunks the post.
