The Eternals and First Avengers Actually Met Millions Of Years Ago

Warning! Spoilers for Eternals: Celestia #1 by Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics is about to take another deep dive into the history of the Eternals, with their next comic story focusing on their inital meeting with the first Avengers of 1,000,000 BCE. In a brand new preview for Eternals: Celestia #1, Ajak's original responsibility as a translator for the Celestials is expanded on. In the story, her unlikely encounter with Marvel's oldest Avengers team more than a million years ago is set to be revealed.

The Eternals are one of the oldest races in Marvel Comics history, as their creation at the hands of the Celestials occurred more than one million years ago. The group served the Celestials and formed their own society on Earth. In Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, and Matthew Wilson's current Eternals run, it was revealed that each time one of their own died and was resurrected by the Great Machine, it ultimately cost a human life as well. That meant the Eternals accidentally killed thousands of innocent lives. Gillen's continued to add to the lore of the Eternals, with the most recent one-shot, Eternals: Thanos Rises, showing how the Mad Titan's birth created a domino effect for the future fate of the ancient heroes.

In a new preview for Eternals: Celestia #1 by Kieron Gillen, Kei Zama, John Livesay, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles, the story opens with Ajak recounting how she's spent nearly a million years as the interpreter and diplomat for the mighty Celestials. Ajak sheds tears as she says the Celestials left the Eternals to fend for themselves after determining they had no use for them. The story then takes readers back a million years, as Earth's oldest heroes interrupt Ajak's conversation with a Celestial.

Ajak is greeted by the Avengers of 1,000,000 BCE. The group features some of the most powerful Marvel Comics heroes ever. Members include the former Phoenix, Odin, the Earth's first Sorcerer Supreme in Agamotto, the first Black Panther, the very first Iron Fist, a Hulk-like creature wielding the Starbrand, and the first Ghost Rider who rides a fiery Mammoth.

It's not exactly clear what the first Avengers want with the Eternals. Ajak doesn't seem to be too perturbed by their arrival, but as someone who frequently speaks with literal gods, she's seen many more amazing things than the ancient superteam. Still, it's cool to see two of Marvel's oldest groups, the Avengers and the Eternals, meet for the first time. It will be fascinating to see if the Eternals and first Avengers were allies or enemies. Readers will find out more when Eternals: Celestia #1 arrives in comic book stores on Wednesday.
