Eternals Put Its Focus On The Wrong Couple | Screen Rant

Eternals wasn’t safe from romance, and its main couple was formed by team members Sersi and Ikaris, but the writers focused on the wrong couple. Now that the Infinity Saga has come to an end and Thanos is no longer around, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally moving forward with its highly-anticipated Phase 4, which covers both movies and TV shows. This new wave has the multiverse as its main theme, but it’s also taking some time to introduce new characters and their own mythologies, and the most recent addition to the MCU are the Eternals, who had been on Earth for centuries but no one noticed.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals introduced the title team, an alien race created by the Celestial Arishem and who were sent to Earth to keep it safe from their evil counterparts, the Deviants. The Eternals eventually parted ways and lived separate lives for centuries, and were forced to reunite as the Deviants returned and a catastrophic event called “The Emergence” approached. Although Eternals is all about the team of the same name, the main protagonist was Sersi (Gemma Chan), the most empathetic of all and who has the power to manipulate and transform matter, and the movie paid special attention to her relationship with fellow Eternal Ikaris (Richard Madden), who turned out to be very different than she and everyone else thought.

Sersi and Ikaris even got married at some point, but he left without explanation years later, and they didn’t see each other until a Deviant attacked London in the present day. Eternals, then, spent a big part of its flashbacks telling the story of Sersi and Ikaris’ rollercoaster romance, and they were the main couple through the whole movie (even though Sersi had another romantic partner: Dane Whitman, played by Kit Harington), but they shouldn’t have been. Eternals had another couple, albeit one that was more discreet, and which ended up having a bigger impact on the audience: Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) and Druig (Barry Keoghan).

The same flashbacks used to explore the origins and early battles of the Eternals against the Deviants as well as the evolution of Sersi and Ikaris’ romance also showed that there was a strong connection between Makkari and Druig, which only grew with time. Although the movie didn’t spend much time exploring their relationship nor did they share too much screen time, their brief appearances together were powerful enough to win over the hearts of viewers, and their bond seemed a lot more unique than that between Sersi and Ikaris. Fans have taken to social media to express their love for the Makkari/Druig pair, and wish Eternals would have shown more of them together or would have seen them kiss when they reunited at the end of the final battle, proving that the writers chose the wrong couple to focus on – or, at least, they could have shared a bit of the spotlight with Makkari and Druig.

With Ikaris now gone, Sersi taken by Arishem (along with Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos and Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo), and Thena (Angelina Jolie), Makkari, and Druig traveling through space in the Domo, an Eternals sequel could give more attention to the fans’ new favorite MCU couple, making up for the time lost in the first movie and expanding on their genuine connection.
