Fans of the NBA 2K series recently got a closer look at NBA 2K22, which releases September 10, as well as some of its biggest upcoming features. One significant change is how The City will appear. The City in NBA 2K22 is poised to introduce more expansive RPG mechanics, including the opportunity for players to pursue side careers alongside their NBA ventures.
Although it was exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game, The City was a major addition to NBA 2K21. It functioned as a new social space, evolving upon The Neighborhood that appeared in previous NBA 2K games. It was criticized at the time for its reliance on microtransactions, a feature that has (to some extent) hindered NBA 2K21's reputation among fans despite marking the series' leap to next-gen consoles.
NBA 2K22 will likewise be releasing across some of the latest consoles, including the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S once again. The game will also be available on PC, the Nintendo Switch, and the PS4 and Xbox One. As with NBA 2K21 though, The City will be exclusive to next-gen consoles. Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC players will instead board the 2K Cruise, which sets The Neighborhood in a new venue: a sailing luxury cruise ship.

For PS5 and Xbox Series X/S users, MyCAREER and The City have been combined into one space where players can interact with new and familiar faces and engaging storylines, more details on which will be revealed at the start of September. Whereas NBA 2K21's version of The City featured NPCs and quests on a more limited basis, it appears that NBA 2K22 is focusing on making those central to the experience, helping to make The City feel more narratively developed. More than that, it's allowing players to extend their story well beyond their time spent on the court.
MyCAREER won't be exclusively geared toward basketball in NBA 2K22. Side ventures can help players build professional profiles in other spaces, as well. While it hasn't yet been fully outlined what other careers will be available in NBA 2K22, a couple have been specifically detailed thus far. Players can expand into the fashion or music industry, for example, rising to success as a hip-hop star as well as a sports star. It sounds as though successes in these career paths will also have an impact on the home base in The City, which will evolve as players level up in other areas of business. As the official release date approaches, more details will undoubtedly be revealed about what other ambitions fans of the series will be able to work toward in NBA 2K22.
