The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Releases First Trailer

Before meeting Vesemir in live-action form, get a deeper look at his origin story in the official trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. In late 2019, Netflix debuted the first season of The Witcher, its long-awaited show based on Andrzej Sapkowski's successful fantasy book series of the same name. The streamer was so confident in the show's success that it greenlit season 2 before the first had even premiered. Additionally, during the hiatus ahead of The Witcher season 2, Netflix plunged forward with more projects set within the the same universe.

The first to arrive is the anime prequel movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Produced by the studios behind The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender, the movie follows Vesemir, the mentor of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill). Instead of being the grown man audiences will meet in The Witcher season 2, he'll be a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped poverty to slay monsters for coin. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will find Vesemir on a frightening adventure when a strange new monster begins terrorizing a kingdom.

Ahead of its debut later this month, Netflix has released the official trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The clip is notably longer than the teaser that arrived weeks ago and reveals a snippet of Vesemir's life before he became a witcher. The new trailer also digs a bit more into the terrifying conflict that lies ahead for Vesemir and his companion Tetra. Check it out below.

Though it is in a very different style than The Witcher, Nightmare of the Wolf holds some key connections to the series. Vesemir will make his debut in the forthcoming second season, where he'll be played by Killing Eve star Kim Bodnia. Meanwhile, Theo James voices Vesemir for the film, reprising his brief vocal role from The Witcher season 1. He'll be joined by Lara Pulver, Graham McTavish, and Mary McDonnell.

Animation is becoming the perfect place for franchises to fill out key parts of their history that cannot be depicted in live-action. The Witcher: The Nightmare of the Wolf so far looks like an excellent companion piece to the flagship show, with the trailer showing how it will match The Witcher's typical blend of action and magic. For fans unfamiliar with the books and the games, they can get a pre-season 2 introduction into Vesemir through The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf; as the trailer revealed, the movie will dig deeply into his history, which can help inform who he is in the future. Though the wait for season 2 has gone on for longer than expected, there's at least some Witcher content on the way to tide fans over.
