Jamie Foxx Wrote Misery-Inspired Script Based on a Real Fan Encounter

Jamie Foxx is interested in rebooting Stephen King's Misery, and has even penned a new version that was inspired by a fan encounter. Misery is a 1990 psychological thriller-horror film based on the King novel of the same name. The film, directed by Rob Reiner and starring James Caan, Kathy Bates, Lauren Bacall and Richard Farnsworth, proved to be one of the more successful film adaptions of King's work. The film gained significant critical acclaim and Bates' performance as Annie Wilkes earned her an Academy Award.

Misery follows the story of famed novelist, Paul Sheldon, who is held captive by an unhinged, obsessive fan who forces him to write a novel. While the 1990 film proved incredibly successful, there has not yet been an attempt to reboot the film with a modern take. However, considering the recent revivals of It and Pet Sematary, other film adaptions of King's stories may due for remakes soon, too. Misery, in particular, may be more timely in the 21st century, considering how technology and social media has made it so much easier for fans to foster their obsessions with celebrities.

As reported by Men's Health, Foxx penned a Misery-inspired script after an encounter with a fan. Unfortunately, Foxx did not reveal specifics about his script, the encounter, or if he has serious intentions to remake Misery. However, it seems that the encounter was unsettling enough to inspire him to write an entire horror screenplay based on the experience. The encounter occurred when Foxx visited with a couple who had won an evening with him. While his meeting with the couple was only suppose to last 30 minutes, it ran overtime and got a bit "weird." Read Foxx's full comments below:

I just rewrote Misery. You know what an actor loves more than money? Compliments. I was supposed to be there for 30 minutes. I ended up staying there for two hours—doing shit from Ray.But then it got weird. So I built upon that.

Foxx didn't expand upon what exactly made the encounter so strange, but the revelation that he has rewritten Misery is intriguing enough as it is. It is particularly interesting because Foxx, while boasting a successful filmography, awards and accolades, has largely stayed away from the horror genre. He is most well known for his role in films such as Ray, Soul, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and is assumed to be reprising his role as Electro in Spider-Man: No Way Home later this year. In addition to this, while Foxx frequently wears the labels of actor, comedian, musician, and songwriter, he has not ventured too far into the field of screenwriting.

Overall, while Foxx's interest in remaking Misery is exciting, it remains to be seen exactly what will come of it. If branching into the horror genre, Foxx's impressive experience and film credits would make a Misery reboot particularly appealing. What's more, the fact that it is based on his own bizarre experience as an A-list celebrity would give Foxx's Misery an element of truth and intrigue that could make the film even eerier than the original. Ultimately, however, Foxx would have big shoes to fill remaking a hit like Misery, which still lives in the memories of so many King fans as an all-time classic.
