A story trailer for Kukoos - Lost Pets shows off the game's retro platformer gameplay and aesthetic. The 3D platformer from Brazilian developer Petit Fabrik appears to pay tribute to beloved titles such as Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, and Donkey Kong 64. While they were most popular in the late '90s and early 2000s, 3D platformers have been released in recent years and many of them have found great success among fans of the genre.
Multiple high-quality 3D platformers have been released in 2021 alone, proving that the genre still has a place in the modern gaming industry. Nintendo's signature Super Mario franchise is perhaps the most obvious example, as a rerelease of Super Mario 3D World was able to find new success for a 2013 title that was largely underappreciated. 2017's Super Mario Odyssey is another example of a recent 3D platformer that received high praise from gamers, with many considering it the best game of that year. Other 2021 releases, such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Psychonauts 2, were likewise able to demonstrate that the persistent love that 3D platformers receive from gamers.
A story trailer for Petit Fabrik's Kukoos - Lost Pets, posted to YouTube by Humberto Rodrigues, illustrates how the upcoming title harkens back to retro platformers of the '90s and 2000s. The trailer establishes a cartoonish world that is inhabited by small monkey-like people and their various pets. When the pets are brainwashed by a giant frog, the player must jump their way across various worlds and collect unique pet companions. These pets can grant the player different abilities, such as the power to glide through the air or create a solid floating platform. Collectible coins and varied levels instantly bring to mind classic titles such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. While no release date has been specified, a demo of Kukoos - Lost Pets can be downloaded on Steam.
Alongside Kukoos - Lost Pets, several more upcoming games look to be capitalizing on the popularity of classic 3D platformer titles. Purple Lamp Studios is currently developing Spongebob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake, a game that will follow up the developer's work on the remaster Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated. Like other games within the genre, the upcoming title will see everyone's favorite sea sponge visit various different locations as he explores an entire multiverse of worlds. Battle for Bikini Bottom included several different playable characters as well, though this feature may not be translated into The Cosmic Shake.
Kukoos - Lost Pets looks to successfully capture the speed and style of the retro titles that it seeks to emulate. The platformer appears to feature a wide array of levels to traverse and pet abilities to acquire, which should add a nice amount of variety to the experience. With a charming art style and challenging traversal which mirrors Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64, Kukoos - Lost Pets could be yet another quality 3D platformer released in the modern-day.
