Animal Crossing: New Horizons continuously adds seasonal items for players to unlock or purchase, like the Handheld Lantern. This new item has six distinct designs available and can be changed at an ACNH DIY workbench with a customization kit. The Handheld Lantern is only available for a limited time, so players should be sure to obtain at least one lantern before they're no longer available.
The lantern is being released as a seasonal item in celebration of Saint Martin's Day, a festival involving a feast to celebrate the Funeral Day of Saint Martin of Tours. One of the variations of the Handheld Lantern has geese on it because this is the preferred food at the celebration feast for this holiday. The Saint Martin's Day celebration takes place on November 11th each year, so, in coordination with the holiday, this limited-time item is available from November 1st to November 11th.
Players can find one lantern design per day in the ACNH Nook Shopping section at the Nook Stop. The small green and white terminal is located inside the Town Hall to the right. The Handheld Lanterns are medium-sized items that can be carried by the player and illuminate a small area. They can be customized, but they're also available to buy in six different designs.
After purchasing a Handheld Lantern, players will have to wait one day to receive it. The lanterns cost 1,100 bells each, only five can be purchased per day, and they are time-locked seasonal items. Even though they're only available for a limited time, players that want to stock up on them can use a time travel trick to cheat the game. Simply purchase lanterns, skip ahead to the next day so they're delivered, then go back to the previous day and purchase more. This can be done multiple times, but players will only receive the one available design for that day. The six variations of the Handheld Lantern can all be unlocked and used by either buying each iteration or buying one and changing it with a customization kit.

- Moon Design – black background with yellow crescent moons
- Stained Glass Design – multi-colored shapes with black borders
- Sun Design – white background with orange and yellow suns
- Goose Design – white background with several geese around it
- Leaf Design – white background with green and orange leaves
Some seasonal items return each year in ACNH, so these may be available again in the future, but they are time-locked and can only be obtained between November 1st and November 11th. This means that once this time frame passes, players can't set their console back in time to get more lanterns. The Handheld Lantern is just one of the items that exist outside of time traveling in ACNH, however, players can still use the mechanic to their advantage to get their lanterns sooner.
