Paul Rudd has claimed the hotly contested title of People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2021. The 52-year-old actor is mainly known for his comedic roles, but has been the subject of admiration from audiences since his movie career kicked off in the mid 1990s. The actor made his mark on teenage hearts everywhere with his role as the sensitive Josh in 1995's Clueless opposite Alicia Silverstone. Recently, the actor has become best known for his portrayal of the superhero Scott Lang/Ant-Man in the MCU.
Rudd is currently involved in some of Hollywood’s biggest projects. Alongside his continuing role in the Marvel universe, the actor is due to star in the next installment in the Ghostbusters franchise: Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The film will act as a sequel to the original two Ghostbusters movies with many of the original cast, including Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Ernie Hudson, returning to reprise their roles. Ghostbusters: Afterlife will ignore the events set up in the 2016 female-led Ghostbusters reboot, which was both divisive and financially unsuccessful. Rudd is also currently working on the next Ant-Man film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is scheduled for release in 2023.
Now, with official confirmation from People, Rudd has another title to add to his career: Sexiest Man Alive. In winning the award, Rudd has beaten off some hot competition from Marvel co-star Chris Evans, who was heavily rumoured to be taking the title this year. The actor has joined other MCU alumni as a Sexiest Man Alive, with Idris Elba, Chris Hemsworth, Michael B. Jordan, and Ryan Reynolds each having previously been decorated with the title. "I do have an awareness, enough to know that when people hear that I'd be picked for this, they would say, 'What?'. This is not false humility. There are so many people that should get this before me. When I think about myself, I think of myself as a husband and a father, like I'm that ... [My wife] was stupefied. But you know she was very sweet about it. After some giggling and shock, she said 'Oh, they got it right.' And that was very sweet. She was probably not telling the truth, but what's she going to say?
I'm hoping now that I'll finally be invited to some of those sexy dinners with Clooney and Pitt and B Jordan. And I figure I'll be on a lot more yachts."
Along with Keanu Reeves and Elijah Wood, Rudd is known for his enviable ability to seemingly avoid ageing. However, it isn’t just his consistent looks that make him award-winningly attractive. Like Reynolds, the actor’s humour and commitment to his family cement his allure, although his action-movie-fit physique certainly doesn't hurt his case. Fans of Evans will be disappointed to see that another year has gone by without the Captain America star taking the title. His role in next year’s Lightyear could either help or hinder his chances for the next award, as while Buzz Lightyear isn’t the most traditionally sexy role, fans will no doubt find Evan’s voice acting an good enough reason to see it.
For now, 2021’s Sexiest Man Alive will be content with the award, and from the sound of his comments, Rudd is going to make the most of it. Meanwhile, lifelong fans of Rudd will be satisfied that their crush has finally been justified. After all, while Paul Rudd hasn’t always received the same level of in-universe thirst as Hemsworth’s Thor, or Evans’ Captain America, that clearly doesn't make him any less sexy.
