Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Creator Has More Movie Ideas

The creator of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist says he has ideas on how to continue the story, either through more movies or more TV episodes. Running for two seasons on NBC, the musical dramedy focused on Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy), a software developer who experiences a freak accident and gains the ability to hear people’s most personal thoughts in the form of popular songs. Though it was reported back in June that NBC was canceling Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist after season 2, Roku announced shortly after that they were reviving the show as a Christmas movie.

The movie, titled Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, begins as Zoey and her family prepare to celebrate their first holiday without Mitch (Peter Gallagher). Faced with this somber milestone, Zoey does her best to create a magical Christmas for her family in the spirit of what Mitch used to do. Along with Levy, who will be back in the title role, the film’s cast includes the main actors on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, in addition to a few other familiar characters. It has been noted previously that if the movie does well, Roku could order more episodes to continue the series.

Speaking with EW to promote Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, which premieres December 1 on The Roku Channel, series creator Austin Winsberg revealed that he has ideas on how to keep the world of Zoey Clarke alive — either through more episodes or more movies. Though he stressed that the upcoming holiday film stands alone as a story, with a clear beginning, middle, and end, he also said the cast loved reuniting for the Roku project. In a promising comment, Winsberg said that he already has plenty of "movie ideas." Read his full comments below.

“I could definitely see the story continuing, either more episodes or more movies. I have lots more Zoey movie ideas in my head. Now that I’ve kind of come around to the Zoey movie idea and the structure of these movies, I have more movie ideas in my head already. If there’s a demand out there? And the cast really loved making the movie too. There was something about coming in to do this one particular thing and to really just focus on that that I think everyone really responded to. Everybody had a good time. It would be great if we could ever do more, but I have no idea what the future holds. I wish I had control over that. I'm not the person who controls that.”

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist season 2 ended with the shocker that Max (Skylar Astin) now has the ability to hear Zoey’s thoughts through song. The movie will pick up on that thread, also revealing where the two characters are in their romantic relationship. For most of the show, Max has felt conflicted about the fact that Zoey knows what he’s thinking, so the shift puts them on more equal footing. The movie, as well as the potential future episodes that Winsberg is referencing, could better serve popular supporting characters like Tobin (Kapil Talwalker) and Leif (Michael Thomas Grant).

Even though some viewers felt that Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist season 2 was a step below the consistency and momentum of the first season, many critics and audiences were disappointed by the cancellation of the series. In the current landscape of network television, it stood as a relatively rare title that succeeded creatively in terms of fitting an ambitious premise into a familiar setup. Thankfully, just in time for the holidays, fans are getting the good news that Zoey’s story may not be over just yet.
