Before the announcement of Avengers: Endgame, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wondered about the film's title for months - and now Marvel Comics is officially using a fan-favorite guess for real. Marvel Studios' fourth team-up film, released in 2019, kept its title a closely-guarded secret until a teaser debuted on December 7th (even the video was simply titled "Marvel Studios' Avengers - Official Trailer" to maintain the surprise). But an upcoming event in the comics appears to take inspiration from the many fans of Marvel.
Even before Endgame's title was revealed, fans correctly guessed many important story beats and plot points. They guessed there would be a substantial time-jump after Infinity War, and they also guessed time travel would be an important story element. Based on several key leaks and an overall time travel-centric adventure, the Marvel faithful came up with the title that they believed best suited the film: Avengers Forever. Alas, it was not to be.
Avengers Forever was not the title of the 22nd Marvel film, but it will be the title of an upcoming event from creators Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder. The company revealed more in a statement from Marvel; the event "...pulls together archeologist Tony Stark, AKA the Invincible Ant-Man, and Avengers from across the multiverse to bring order to timelines where 'hope' is a four letter word." The series also appears to change the Avengers' famous title from "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" to "the Multiverse's Mightiest Heroes."

Other popular fan guesses as to Endgame's true title were Avengers: Eternity (referencing Eternity, the concept of life and endless time in the Marvel Universe given form), Avengers: Annihilation, and Avengers Assemble (itself the title of the UK release of the original 2021 Avengers). Marvel writers engage with fans frequently, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that the title for the comics event came from popular fan theories about Endgame. The Multiverse will undoubtedly be a major component of the event, seeing as Tony Stark is written as Ant-Man here (and an archeologist to boot). Even though Tony Stark is dead in the MCU, his comic book counterpart is still very much an A-list character and perhaps even the main character of the event.
For the fans who truly believed that the film then-known as Avengers 4 would be called Avengers Forever, this event title should bring some solace if not outright vindication. This is only one of eight major titles unveiled by Marvel Comics, and they all appear to connect to the Multiverse in some fashion. Marvel has yet to release any further details of the event other than the release window: December 2021. Until then, the details of Avengers Forever - once a fan-suggested title for Avengers: Endgame - will remain a mystery.
