DC Admits An Alternate Justice League Has A Way Better Name

Warning: Spoilers for Justice League Infinity #3!

When it comes to powerful super teams, DC Comics’ Justice League is an iconic group of heroes that protects the people of Earth to the best of their abilities, and now it’s just been admitted that a different, parallel version of the team has a way better name! Enter the Justice Alliance, and if intrepid reporter Lois Lane has anything to say about it, these guys have the market cornered on a far more appropriate (and accurate) team title.

Admitted in the Lois Lane-penned narration that accompanies Justice League Infinity #3, by JM Dematteis and James Tucker along with Ethen Beavers, Lois is musing over the idea of the multiverse and how much bigger and stranger it is than “most of us ever suspect.” Reeling from the inexplicable swapping of her world’s Superman with an evil version of him from another, Lois is still trying to wrap her head around what a multiverse means let alone the implications of it as she offhandedly calls out the Justice League for having a name that in hindsight, could be better.

Talking about a parallel world, Earth-D, where “a very different Superman led a very different Justice League,” Lois is quick to correct herself saying, “Excuse me. Not League. They were called the Justice Alliance.” Laid over panels showcasing an entirely different version of the Justice League Lois knows and loves, the word “alliance” hits her in a way she can’t help but further expand upon immediately after.

Following this up by saying, “I actually like that better,” Lois confirms that her hometown heroes are being one-upped in their branding by an alternate team that’s just as formidable as their original counterparts. And although the word “alliance” needs getting used to, Lois is spot on in her feelings for a name change that’s kind of a no-brainer.

Having multiple iterations of the Justice League spread out across DC Comics, “justice” is the first word usually linking the two. And whether it’s the original Justice League, the Justice League of America, the Justice League International, or even the Justice League Dark, “league” is almost exclusively the second word used next. But for a group obsessed with peace and teamwork, “alliance” has a ring to it that the word “league” lacks, as the connotation of it leans a bit more towards the idea of an exclusive or elite team, something DC’s heroes usually try to skew.

So while the multiverse is a place ripe with alternate takes on DC’s mightiest heroes — and although the Justice League is an iconic name on its own — it can’t be denied there are a few better monikers out there that they could have run with at their inception. But regardless of the subtle differences behind these chosen titles, Earth-D has laid claim to the name of Justice Alliance, and the Justice League — and Lois Lane — will just have to deal with it for the time being.
