Kevin Smith Teases Iconic Hockey Game Throwback in Clerks 3 BTS Photo

Writer/director Kevin Smith shares a new photo from the set of Clerks III teasing the return of the iconic street hockey game from the first film. The 1994 Clerks served as Smith's feature debut, on which he served as its writer, director, co-producer, co-editor and co-star. The film received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and was a financial hit, helping Smith launch his interconnected universe of films, View Askewniverse.

Clerks III will revolve around Randal Graves after he survives a heart attack and decides to make a movie about his and his buddy Dante Hicks' lives working at the Quick Stop convenience store and video rental shop next door. The film will feature the returns of the main cast members from both the original Clerks and Clerks II, including Brian O'Halloran as Dante, Jeff Anderson as Dante, Marilyn Ghigliotti as Veronica Loughran, Rosario Dawson as Becky Scott, Trevor Fehrman as Elias Grover and Jason Mewes and Smith as Jay and Silent Bob. Smith has been working on getting Clerks III off the ground for nearly a decade, originally considering turning it into a Broadway play before writing a few different versions of the script that continued to fail to find proper funding until he confirmed earlier this year that the latest draft was complete and Lionsgate acquired the project for a fast-tracked production.

Just a week after wrapping production on the film, Smith has taken to Instagram to share another behind-the-scenes look from Clerks III. The latest image teases the return of the iconic street hockey game from Smith's 1994 feature debut. Check out the new image below:

Every tease Smith has delivered from the set of Clerks III has been an exciting announcement for longtime fans of the filmmaker and the View Askewniverse. From confirmations of exact shot recreations from the original film to Jason Mewes even teasing another musical number is in store for the group after Clerks II's sequence set to the tune of "ABC" by the Jackson 5, Smith is certainly going back to his roots for the long-awaited threequel. The latest tease of the street hockey game should only build that anticipation amongst audiences who fell in love with Smith's debut.

It's interesting to also note that Smith's latest BTS tease for Clerks III reveals that he enlisted the help of his Comic Book Men co-hosts Walt Flanagan, Mike Zapcic, Bryan Johnson and Ming Chen to film the scene. Smith's films have frequently been built around the filmmaker's friends or recurring collaborators returning to pitch in what they can and the AMC reality series remains a favorite amongst many a few years after its conclusion. Though no release date has currently been set for the film, Smith previously confirmed he had already cut together an hour of footage for Clerks III, assuring that word on its arrival should be right around the corner.
