Rick & Morty Season 5: Why Evil Morty’s Portal Is Yellow

At the end of Rick and Morty season 5, Evil Morty shows off a portal gun with one main difference to Rick’s – the portals are yellow, not green. It’s a curious and striking difference, given that all the portal fluid previously seen in the show has been green, as have the portals themselves. Evil Morty’s yellow portal gun looks intriguing, and it’s altered color is representative of even bigger divergences from Rick’s portals.

The Rick and Morty season 5 finale revolves around the Central Finite Curve – a subset of all the infinite realities in the multiverse where Rick is always the smartest and most dominant person. Evil Morty reveals that the Ricks created the Central Finite Curve to achieve power, and that they started mass-producing Mortys to help them maintain it. By the end of the episode, Evil Morty manages to blast a wormhole straight through the Curve and travels through it in a special shuttle, winding up in a new cosmic world where he uses his yellow portal gun.

So, why is Evil Morty’s portal gun yellow? It’s not directly explained, but the implication is that the fluid, and therefore the portals, have different properties than those of the Ricks. The green portals only go to universes within the Central Finite Curve, as those are the only realities Ricks wish to visit. So, the implication is that the yellow fluid and the yellow portals can reach all the other realities – the ones in which Rick is not the smartest person, or the most dominant, or where he may not even exist.

Somehow, Evil Morty devised the formula for the new portal fluid, possibly using the brain scan he did of Rick C-137. The formula could be duplicated and play a larger role in Rick and Morty season 6, especially if Evil Morty continues as a major player in the story. And to top it off, the show’s main Morty could get his own yellow portal gun to use in the future.

Morty now knows about the Central Finite Curve, which means he knows that he’s only ever seen a carefully curated, Rick-dominated set of realities. If he and Rick are truly going to be more equal in future seasons, Rick needs to allow their adventures to transcend the Curve. To do that, it would seem that they’ll need their own yellow portal gun, and it seems appropriate for Morty to be the one to carry it this time – especially after Rick entrusted his old portal gun to Morty during the Rick and Morty season 5 finale.
