A recent Cities: Skylines build meticulously recreated the fictional town of Springfield from one of the longest running television shows ever, The Simpsons. This is not the first time The Simpsons has received attention through fan-made video game creations - recently, a fan-made demo of 2003's The Simpsons: Hit & Run was taken down due to unspecified copyright concerns.
While fans of video-game-rendered The Simpsons content might not have any recent examples to reach for, Cities: Skylines allows for players to build and depict virtually any location - fictional like Springfield or otherwise - that they desire. The city simulator was highly praised upon release in 2015, and its encouragement of mods led to a thriving community of City: Skylines modders to add even more features to a game where players can do nearly anything they want. Players can control their city's laws, traffic, law enforcement - even the energy and water budgets can be tweaked.
One Cities: Skylines player, two dollars twenty, decided to use the platform to build an incredibly detailed rendition of Springfield, the hometown to the Simpsons family and their show's extensive cast of characters. Their video is primarily a first-person perspective from Homer Simpson's iconic pink car, with accompanying sound effects from The Simpsons episodes to add to the overall Springfield atmosphere. Additionally, the player included music and other sound effects to make it seem like the car's radio is on throughout the drive.
The video shows the journey from Homer's place of work at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant to the Simpsons' home, revealing series-staple locations and imagery along the way. Billboards appear to be the medium that most obviously (and creatively) indicates that viewers are travelling through the world in The Simpsons. At the beginning of the video, one billboard advertises Krusty's Clown College, while another later shows off a comical "lost child" sign for Bart Simpsons' relentlessly bullied friend Milhouse Van Houten with "no reward." After driving by similarly classic The Simpsons locations, the pink car pulls into an incredibly accurate rendition of the titular family's brown-orange house.
For a show known for its frequent shenanigans and rambunctious array of characters, the drive through the Cities: Skylines build was surprisingly scenic and relaxing. Of course, The Simpsons' Springfield is certainly not as serene of a place as this video might suggest. However, those who are familiar with the show's depiction of Springfield will likely revel in this build's close attention to physical detail and accuracy.
