Hailee Steinfeld has talked about how her character, Kate Bishop, reacts to working with Clint Barton in Hawkeye. Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye, introduced via a cameo in 2011’s Thor, has proven to be one of the most enduring elements of the MCU since being a founding member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers. Audiences have learned more about the archer in his supporting role across the series, from providing refuge for the superhero team in his family homestead in Avengers: Age of Ultron to becoming the violent vigilante known as Ronin during the in-universe gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Now, Hawkeye will receive his first solo outing in a new six-episode series, which premieres on November 24 on Disney+.
The series will follow Clint Barton after the events of Avengers: Endgame as he tries to enjoy a New York Christmas with his family. However, several enemies made during his time as Ronin seek to take their revenge on the master archer, forcing him to reckon with his past during the holiday season. To face them, he finds himself teamed up with fellow archer, Kate Bishop, in a Die Hard-style Christmas caper inspired by the famous Matt Fraction Hawkeye comic storyline "My Life as a Weapon." From the trailer, Kate Bishop appears to be both a talented archer and Hawkeye copycat, impersonating Barton’s Ronin identity and taking after his advanced archery skills.
Steinfeld recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight and delved into how her character feels about teaming up with the former Avenger. It appears the old saying “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” is as true as ever, as the actor confirmed that Kate Bishop is something of a Hawkeye super-fan looking to carry on the legacy of her idol. Steinfeld detailed how her character reacts to working with Hawkeye, saying:
“She is a New York City girl who has looked at Hawkeye and idolized this person her whole life and she finds herself in a very fun, crazy, possibly life-threatening situation, where she is face-to-face with her hero."

This aligns with a palpable mentor-student dynamic in the trailer, with Clint seemingly dissuading Bishop’s misguided adoption of the Ronin moniker and attempting to refine her enthusiasm. Indeed, the addition of Kate Bishop in Clint Barton’s life will seemingly bring out a new side to the seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D operative, with her high-energy persona clashing against his no-nonsense family man archetype in what Steinfeld describes as “a very wild journey right around Christmastime." This somewhat reflects the aforementioned take on the character written in Fraction's for the Hawkeye comics storyline, which saw a much more street-level Hawkeye team up with his former-protege Kate Bishop.
It’s certainly refreshing to see such a strong appreciation of Hawkeye, considering his status within the MCU. Following the release of The Avengers, the character would often come last in polls of who was audience members favorite hero. This was most likely due to his reduced screen-time and perceived insignificance as an archer on a team of super-soldiers and demi-gods like Thor. This has even been poked fun at in the movies, such as in Avengers: Age of Ultron where Hawkeye himself remarks, “we’re fighting an army of robots and I have a bow and arrow.” It will certainly be intriguing to see how Barton and Bishop's dynamic unfolds, and what the two will have to learn from each other when Hawkeye debuts later this month.
