Fans of DOOM are used to slaying demons as the Doom Guy, but what if players took control of the demons instead? Doomed Love explores the romantic side of devil downtime. The short visual novel combines tongue-in-cheek humor with some heartwarming dialogue to create a neat experience that decides to rip and tear through demon emotions instead of bodies.
The diabolic dating sim is an original story created by David Cooper. The game has multiple endings and routes to take, and each route focuses on a specific demon and their life issues as a spawn of hell. An original score and art style all its own round out the free-to-play package that could start topping the list of the best fan-made DOOM games. Fans of DOOM who enjoy off-beat humor will likely love the references Doomed Love makes to the series.
Romantic DOOM fans can download the game off of David Cooper's itch.io page. The adorable demon experience takes roughly 1-2 hours to beat, so it's fairly short. The characterization really is great; each demon gets a bit of time to showcase a specific issue that a demon could have, which feels somehow realistic and goofy at the same time.
There are four main dateable demons in Doomed Love: Cacodemon, Mancubus, Revenant, and Demon. Each minion of hell has a distinct personality. Cacodemon is the floating head of the group. They take charge in the arts and crafts department for the Icon of Sin festival, and they aren't afraid to make it known. Mancubus is the big and cuddly fiend of the bunch. Unfortunately, they struggle with some self esteem issues.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Revenant is the musician of the group. Their focus on the trumpet and musicality is a reference to the DOOM doot meme that swept the internet when DOOM Eternal initially released. Demon is a bit soft spoken, but it's all due to his identity issues: being just one unnamed cog in an army of identical hellions has damaged their sense of self.
Doomed Love is a great way to relax and enjoy some nice, positive friendship after a hard day. Each DOOM demon has their own adorable quirks and traits that make them endearing, even though players only encounter them for a short period of time. Doomed Love embraces love, friendship, and having flaws in a series that's known for being more violent than nice, and it's a refreshing change of pace.
