Former Keeping Up with The Kardashians star Kim Kardashian took to social media Monday to share an Olympic achievement with fans. It was announced that the star’s luxury loungewear brand, Skims, would be partnering with Team USA to create official garments for athletes competing in the upcoming 2021 Tokyo games. The 40-year-old founded the shapewear brand, now worth over $1.5 billion, back in 2019.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Kim shared the news along with Polaroid shots of Olympic athletes, including soccer player Alex Morgan and basketball superstar Aja Wilson, modeling the collection. The former KUWTK star recounted traveling with her decorated Olympian stepparent Caitlyn Jenner to attend trials in different cities, sharing that she purchased a souvenir T-shirt at every stop to commemorate the experience. Kim also expressed her reverence for both the event and its athletes, saying, “As I would watch the athletes compete, I would grow to understand the dedication and honor being a part of the Olympics embodied.” The mom-of-four described receiving the call inviting Skims to partner with Team USA as a “full-circle moment.”
Fans reacted to the announcement on Reddit, one user commenting, “Go Kimmy!! What an endorsement on quality.” Other users chimed in to offer congratulations and to applaud the “major” achievement. A few commenters expressed excitement for their favorite athletes to wear the garments, one saying, “This is so exciting! Can’t wait to see my girl Simone [Biles] rocking some Skims.”
Growing up immersed in Olympic culture certainly gives the California native a valuable perspective. As KUWTK comes to an end after 15 years, the reality star turned entrepreneur is eager to expand her various business ventures outside of the hit series, including Skims and her successful cosmetics line, KKW Beauty. From a business perspective, outfitting competitors for the games, which typically receive upwards of 30 million viewers, will introduce an entirely new audience to the brand and offer exposure on a global scale.
The announcement is an exciting development in Kim’s transition from reality tv personality to bona fide businesswoman. The star also shared that items from the collection would be available for purchase on the Skims site, allowing fans of Keeping Up With the Kardashians to snag both stylish, comfortable loungewear and a piece of Olympic memorabilia. Following an extended delay as a result of COVID-19, the 2021 Tokyo Olympics are set to begin late next month.
