Loki Premiere Episode Featured Avengers: Endgame Deleted Scenes

The Loki premiere episode featured unused footage from Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios' third TV series for Disney+ has already kicked off,  marking the return of the God of Mischief to the MCU. This time, however, his arc will be separate from Thor as he finds himself embarking on a new adventure as some form of unofficial agent for the Time Variance Authority/TVA.

While the character has died in the primary MCU timeline in Avengers: Infinity War, this version is from 2012, pre-redemption, and on the heels of failing to invade Earth with the help of Thanos' minions. His new story in Loki is kicked off via Endgame's time heist-gone-wrong which offered the God of Mischief the chance to escape his captivity and branch off from the timeline. This effectively made him a target for the TVA whose purpose is to ensure that the so-called Sacred Timeline is preserved. But instead of being reprimanded for his actions, Agent Mobius offers the trickster a chance to earn back his freedom through his cooperation.

Loki's premiere titled "Glorious Purpose" caught up viewers who may not have had an idea of how the Asgardian Prince got into this situation. So, the show had to re-tell his escape from Endgame, and director Kate Herron tells Insider that they didn't simply reuse footage from the 2019 film. Instead, "it was actually a really fun hybrid" of clips shot by the Russo brothers, both used and unused in the theatrical cut of the blockbuster; and new ones that they did specifically for the Disney+ project to focus more on the trickster.

"It was a lot of fun. I mean, what a treat as a director, getting access to the library of the rushes of all these other brilliant filmmakers."

That was the real fun thing with the opening, was getting to show that moment that everyone knows so well, but from a completely different POV.

Like you kind of see this moment in time, and then it's through a different perspective. I think that definitely echoed across the rest of the episode."

Since Loki essentially used B-shots from Endgame, it's difficult to decipher which alternate cuts were included in the show. That said, going back and forth in between the MCU projects, one can pinpoint the new footage that Herron shot for the new Marvel Studios endeavor. That includes a tight shot of the God of Mischief after he had just mocked Captain America's serious remarks. This was once again the case as the team rode the elevator down Stark Tower while Hulk was refused to join them and forced to use the stairs instead. In Loki, the trickster, who had just been mercilessly "Hulk-smashed" teased the green-rage monster by sarcastically waving him goodbye.

Based on the trailers for Loki, however, the show will be back in the 2012 timeline, albeit not via Avengers: Endgame's time heist. There's a shot of the God of Mischief wryly smiling while he's once again in the Stark Tower. Meanwhile, a separate shot showed a ruined New York which has been theorized to be a timeline where his attempts to invade Earth succeeded, leaving the city in ruins. With five more weekly episodes to go, there's still a lot of things to look forward to in the show. Perhaps, it might even feature some surprising cameos as teased, but don't expect Mephisto to pop out.
