Where An Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sequel Should Take Place

Over a year since it initially came out, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has grown stale to a significant portion of its playerbase. Because of that, many Animal Crossing fans are looking ahead to discuss a potential sequel. While currently any news regarding upcoming Animal Crossing titles is nothing but speculation, it's worth considering what changes could be introduced in the future of the franchise. For example, where should the next Animal Crossing game be set?

Since its release in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has provided players with a drip-feed of content, gradually re-introducing features and characters from previous titles in the franchise, such as wetsuit diving or NPCs like Rover. By now, players have cycled through all of the yearly events offered by the game, leaving many to wait in anticipation for more new releases. The last major update was in April 2021, so it seems likely that something new could be coming from Nintendo sometime this summer.

New Horizons has been criticized by fans for its lack of content and meaningful updates, although a recent leak hinting toward potential island expansions could mean that big changes will be coming to the game sometime soon. Although it's likely that Nintendo will be focused on further updating New Horizons for the foreseeable future, some players are already speculating what plans for the next Animal Crossing title could look like, and where exactly the game should take place.

It seems by now that the Animal Crossing series has taken players to just about every logical setting they could think of. From the big city to a deserted island, players even got to experience being the mayor of the town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Nintendo might have to get more creative in order to provide Animal Crossing fans with a fresh experience in their next release. In a game series so focused on the journey of putting down roots and helping the town grow, a logical conclusion is that the next Animal Crossing sequel could explore somewhere entirely unknown.

An Animal Crossing game set in space could provide a brand new backdrop for the franchise, which is an important factor when considering games that have followed the same basic formula for so long. Instead of customizing an island, players could customize an entire small planet. Rather than traveling to other towns through the airport or the town gate, they could use a spaceship. Just as the island setting of New Horizons allowed for new gameplay features like terraforming and island tours, the unique location of outer space could pave the way for new mechanics as well. At the moment, though, it seems like a sequel won't be coming for a while due to the updates being provided for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
