Actress and writer Mindy Kaling reveals that she would be open to a reboot of NBC’s hit workplace sitcom The Office if producer and original series showrunner Greg Daniels is in charge. The Office, which was adapted for American television by Daniels from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC series of the same name, aired on NBC for 9 seasons from 2005 to 2013. Already immensely popular during its original run, The Office has continued to gain fans in the years since it went off the air, with viewers repeatedly streaming the beloved series first on Netflix and now on its current home, Peacock.
While stars like Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, and John Krasinski may be the first to come to mind when thinking about The Office, a large part of the comedy’s continued popularity is thanks to the show’s hilarious and iconic supporting characters, several of whom were portrayed by actors who also wrote for the series. One of these was Mindy Kaling, who wrote, executive produced, and directed for The Office while also playing self-involved fan favorite Kelly Kapoor. Viewers’ enduring love for characters like Kelly, and for the series itself, has kept the show relevant in the 8 years since its finale, and rumors of a revival have swirled for years, with everyone from the actors to the NBCUniversal content chief weighing in on The Office reboot.
Now Kaling has joined the conversation about the potential revival. In an interview with StyleCaster, Kaling shared that she would be “excited and supportive” of a reboot - on the condition that it is led by Greg Daniels, who was the showrunner for The Office during seasons 1 through 4 and returned for season 9. Read what she had to say below:
“If Greg Daniels was in charge of it, I would be excited and supportive and try to help in any way I could. It had to be the right person steering the ship, but if it was Greg, who was the mastermind of the American Office, it would be a great show.”

Kaling’s language is slightly vague - saying that she would be “supportive” and “try to help” doesn’t specify what sort of commitment she would be willing or able to make to a potential reboot. This is understandable, as her career has continued to flourish since her time on The Office, with books, films, and shows such as The Mindy Project and Netflix’s recently renewed Never Have I Ever. Similarly, Daniels himself has stated that while a reboot of The Office remains a possibility, and is something he'd want to be involved in, he’s currently busy with other projects including Netflix’s Space Force and Amazon’s Upload, both of which are heading into their second seasons.
In today’s reboot-filled television landscape, it comes as no surprise that there is so much interest in a possible revival of The Office. While fans old and new would likely welcome the chance to revisit the beloved employees of Dunder Mifflin, it seems as though it would take a very particular set of circumstances - and some complicated scheduling - to get the pieces to fall into place, and to get people like Kaling involved. However, it’s certainly still possible. Whether or not a revival would be able to capture the magic of the original series is an entirely separate question. But as Kaling suggests, if the proper person were in charge, a reboot of The Office could be great. While nothing may currently be in development, fans shouldn't give up on a return to The Office just yet.
