Warning: contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic #9!
In a new preview for Marvel’s Star Wars: The High Republic series, it's revealed a key Jedi figure has turned on the Order, apparently turning a hero some had dubbed the Anti-Anakin to the Dark Side. Despite having fought side by side with her fellow Jedi in previous issues, it looks like Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis has defected from the Jedi Order, joining the marauders known as the Nihil. It's a genuinely sudden and surprising betrayal, but is something deeper going on in the pages of this new Star Wars issue?
In previous issues of The High Republic, Keeve Trennis was knighted into the Jedi Order just before the threat of the plant-based dark side creatures known as the Drengir, who began to infest and corrupt the galaxy (including Keeve’s own Master Sskeer). However, working alongside the High Republic’s Starlight Beacon and an uneasy alliance with the Hutt Clans, Keeve and the Jedi Order managed to fight back against the Drengir’s corruption. That being said, the galaxy is still not without its threats in this early age of the Star Wars timeline.
Now, a preview of The High Republic #9 - from writer Cavan Scott and artist Ario Anindito - released by StarWars.com sees Jedi Wayseeker Orla Jareni in a single fighter just before she’s attacked by the marauding Nihil. However, the surprise reveal is that Keeve herself is piloting the Nihil Stormship, sporting an all-new look resembling the Nihil along with Jedi Master Terec, who’s seemingly betrayed the Jedi Order as well. That being said, it’s possible that this could just be a plot by the Jedi to infiltrate the Nihil and its dark organization, led by Marchion Ro. Enjoy the preview pages and synopsis for the upcoming issue:
- STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC #9
- A NEW STORY BEGINS THIS ISSUE - THE SHADOW OF THE NIHIL!
- Following the terrible events of The Rising Storm, the villainous NIHIL are in retreat, hunted by THE JEDI.
- WAYSEEKER KNIGHT ORLA JARENI is attacked by a lone Nihil Stormship in deep space, a Stormship commanded by one of the Jedi's own.
- Which of STARLIGHT BEACON'S number have joined the Nihil Horde? And how far will they turn from the Light?
If this is indeed a genuine betrayal, it’s certainly come very suddenly, with no prior hints or teases in the comic series itself. However, the fact that Terec is with Trennis does seem to support the idea that they’re simply working undercover to take the Nihil down from within, and attacking the Jedi Wayseeker is a means to prove themselves to the real Nihil. The possible hint comes from the fact that Terec is a twin, possessing a shared mind with their sibling Ceret, who's absent from this new preview. Their connection would motivate them to have the same allegiances, so it makes more sense that one would be working undercover rather than suddenly choosing to defect to a radically different group.
Will Keeve and Terec be forced to fight their former Jedi allies to keep up the ruse, or are they fighting them in genuine service of the Nihil cause? However it all shakes out when the full issue releases on September 1, it’s going to be interesting to see whether Keeve still serves the light side or if she's preceding Anakin into the darkness in Star Wars: The High Republic #9.
