James Gunn and his The Suicide Squad cast are hosting a watch party before the film leaves HBO Max. The Suicide Squad was Warner Bros.’ latest attempt at launching the Suicide Squad after David Ayer’s 2016 version succeeded at the box office but failed to impress audiences and critics. The studio hired Gunn and gave him creative freedom to create the reboot/soft sequel of the Suicide Squad, which led to an R-rated DC film featuring a host of new characters like Peacemaker and Bloodsport alongside a few returning faces like Harley Quinn and Rick Flag. It tells the story of Task Force X embarking on a dangerous mission to Corto Maltese to destroy a lab and something known as Project Starfish, but naturally, there’s a ton of chaos along the way.
The Suicide Squad, like the previous two DCEU films, was a part of Warner Bros.’ controversial decision to release films in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. Although this release strategy may have played a part in the film’s disappointing box office numbers, Gunn’s latest project has been a big hit on the streaming service, becoming the second biggest release in HBO Max’s history (behind Mortal Kombat). The Suicide Squad has also received rave reviews from critics and audiences, most notably for its excellent blend of humor, R-rated violence, and a strong emotional core. As with all the simultaneous HBO Max releases, after a month, they will leave the streaming service and become theater exclusives. But before The Suicide Squad leaves HBO Max, Gunn and co. have a fun event planned.
The Suicide Squad will no longer be available on HBO Max come September 5, and on his Instagram, Gunn announced that he and the film’s cast are hosting a watch party on Twitter on Monday, August 30 at 6pm PT/9pm ET. Fans simply need to stream the film and use #TSSWatchParty “to join the fun,” and Gunn encouraged fans to join with key words being, “before it leaves the following week.” Full post can be seen below:
It’s a smart move from Warner Bros. to try and get another big viewership number for The Suicide Squad before it leaves the streaming service for a few months. Those that have put off watching the DCEU film will potentially find this the perfect time to finally tune in. Also, considering the behind-the-scenes insight Gunn and others have already provided on their social media pages, fans who have already seen the film will receive a whole new viewing experience getting the director and casts' two cents while watching scenes unfold. Gunn is no stranger to watch parties; he did some last year for his Guardians of the Galaxy films. However, alongside his colorful cast members, it is sure to be even more entertaining for fans.
Nathan Fillion, who plays TDK in the film, already commented on the post, writing: “Can I come?” So it’ll be interesting to see who joins the director for the watch party. Also, considering The Suicide Squad’s disappointing box office numbers, gaining more views for the film on HBO Max is likely even more important now. Fans will no doubt get some fun and insightful comments from The Suicide Squad team, and it will likely be the last big Suicide Squad-related event on HBO Max until the release of Gunn’s Peacemaker series. So fans should tune in for The Suicide Squad watch party if they want one more fun event featuring their favorite DC villains.
